Anyone know anything about EBAY frauds involving 2nd chance offers? Edited: It is fraud, please be

I was recently 3rd highest bidder on a coin worth about $1,500. The winning bidder left feedback for the seller. Seller left feedback for winning bidder. Both are legitimate well respected EBAY'ers. Then I receive a '2nd chance offer' from the seller. I've had this happen before where an item was returned within the return period...but never had it happen where I was 3rd highest bidder.

Has anyone heard of, or been victim to, any fraud involving 2nd chance offers?

Since I had made a bid on the coin, I was able to use the 'ask a question' feature through EBAY to inquire of the seller whether the '2nd chance offer' did in fact come from him/her. I'm waiting to hear on that point. Other than that, I don't know what else to do to try to determine if its a legitimate offer or not. Thoughts...ideas??? Thanks in advance.

No mention in the offer about Western Union in the communication. Here is the content of the 2nd chance offer in its entirety. I omitted the senders email address at the end of link for privacy reasons. What do you think?

We saw that you are interested in "1894 Morgan PCGS VF-30 A Rare and Beautiful Coin!" - (Item# 3953128835) by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, this seller is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price. The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction or this seller has duplicate items for sale or the reserve price is not met in a Reserve Price. If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection. This is an eBay protected transaction and you can pay with trust. To purchase this item, don't reply to this mail, just contact the seller to discuss the price at (email address) Thank you, eBay Inc.

Ksteelheader: Thank you tons for that link. I did a quick search before posting...but didn't find that one. That link seals the deal for me, because....the email link for me to respond on my 2nd chance offer, is the SAME as Mercurydimeguy had on his!!!image Because of that, I'm now posting the entire 2nd Chance Offer I received as an educational warning to others who may receive them. Here is the entire unedited communication I received:

I've forwarded the communication to spoof@ebay.com per the recommendations. Thanks for the prompt assistance and warning. Learned more in 15 minutes here than I would have in 2 weeks of email exchanges with EBAY.

All you can do it wait to hear back from the seller to see if he really sent it. My guess is it's a scam. The way second chance offers are abused by scammers, I wouldn't be surprised if Ebay does away with that "feature."

Same person as one other one I received, and same person as greghansen below.
  • This happened to me a couple months ago and it almost cost me $1,300. I had been communicating with the scammer via regular Email and then decided to send a message to the real seller via the Ebay "Ask Seller A Question" function. The real seller replied saying he didn't know what I was talking about and the coin was already sold. I later received an Email from the scammer asking me to send the money to the UK via Western Union. I let him know he was reported to Ebay and the authorities.

  • I don't know if this is a scam or what but I got the same message from the same person.
