PCI is turning out to be my bread and butter!!!

I just keep finding one good coin after another in PCI holders...............I know I should just keep this to myself, but for the newer collectors out there..............let me say this again....

BUY THE COIN AND NOT THE HOLDER

For $65 bucks this is a heck of a coin....not a monster, but certainly attractive with a nice rainbow of color on the Obverse. image

I want to see pictures when you get it... I couldn't tell if it was going to be really chattery, so I passed on it... hope I was wrong to have done so (well, not really, but it seemed like a nice thing to say image)

I won't argue with your reasoning...... but I have stuck with the older green label and photo certified holders, and have been happy with the results....

<< <i>BUY THE COIN AND NOT THE HOLDER >>

Please tell us how you can accomplish this when buying sight unseen on eBay.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Start buying these gold label holders in quantity and come back and report. Sure, occasionally you'll find one like this, but nine out of ten of these holders don't come close to making the grade.
  • This is a situation where the grade really doesn't matter. The price isn't based on the coin but rather the color so if this is an MS62 or 63 coin....I still feel like it's a good deal....and the toning is no brainer NT.

I agree about the green label and Photo Certified Slabs...but they seem to be getting tougher to find as folks are catching on. image

Yeah it's a no brainer, and who knows about the grade, the image is fuzzy.

I pop in threads like this basically to remind particularly newbies that if you have the experience in these type of coins, occasionally you can find a score. But if you don't, and are relying on the label and grade, these can be a financial disaster.
  • I agree.....I wouldn't consider myself a newbie though (12 years).............I will stack my Morgan dollar grading up against anyone here....again, I don't care if the coin is a bleepin AU...I bought it for the NT color which is worth $65 in my opinion. Could the grade be wrong...absolutely!!! Does it matter to a collector that knows what he like....absolutely not!!! Should it mater to a newbie who is relying on PCI to tell them what they are buying...you betcha image

My statement to newbies about buying the coin and not the holder holds true in this case as the holder and grade were irrelevant to me...I simply bought a colorful coin based on the coins own merits. image

I have a pair of eyes that see's a nicely toned coin in the picture so it's as site seen as you are going to get on Ebay. I don't want to buy any coins specifically in any type of holder, but I can assure that 9 out of 10 times I can spot a coin like this in anyone's holder....and know I am going to like the coin. The only thing I would concern myself with is AT'd coins in PCI holders, which....when in doubt I wouldn't touch.

If you keep buying green or gold PCI slabs I guarantee that sooner or later you will end up on the short end of the stick. There's another issue that few people here know about and that's PVC damage. The old green inserts were PVC. I know someone well that cracked some and was really hit with PVC fumes. If he reads this maybe he will say a few words concerning it.

  • I'll probably try to cross this one into a PCGS holder is that is the case. image

The early PCI inserts leeched PVC. The insert was changed while the green label ten digit holders were still in production. The gold label inserts don't leech PVC.

I suggest you give any PCI coins you crack a good acetone soak. Ir won't hurt the toning.

If I had my drothers I'd buy only PCGS and NGC but I don't. Sometimes the neat coin I'm seeking is in someone elses holder. I buy it, usually at a discount, and enjoy the ownership of it.

I understand the need to educate, but one of the pleasures of knowing your field is then 'taking chances' such as the Morgan featured in this Thread.

I like it and the price is right.
The bands of color are correct and the coin looks MintState (for the lack of a better photo).

    Nice catch!

So, does this mean that any and all old pci holdered coins should be cracked out before problems develop........ and are there other old holders to be wary of?? image

They changed the insert in mid production, so the only way to tell is if the coin developes the first stage of contamination, the green film. If you are going to crack an old PCI holder, it will hit you immediately with the shower curtain smell.
  • Thanks for the info Eric....this thread is turning out to be educational after all. image
