Please Mr. Postman

So has the postman been good to you lately? How about sharing what you have picked up lately.

I picked up two very ugly condition T3's that only a Turkey Red collector might be proud of:

I don't see anything ugly about 'em Mike. Truly beautiful cards and the borders don't bother me a bit. Thanks for putting the scans up.

I was really wanting others to post what they have picked up lately but as it goes for the set:
1911 Turkey Red caginet cards - 125 - 20 of them are boxers. The cards are "premiums" which mean that people got a coupon in the packs of Turkey Red, Old Mill or Fez cigarettes, and sent them in for these lithographic quality 5 3/4 X 8" cards. They more than likely got dinged in shipment and many survived having been tacked to the wall. All and all, the term "cabinet" card came from the fact that a lot of people put them up in cabinets as display "art" pieces during that time. The back either come with a check list or the rather interesting Turkey Red advertising.

OK, enuff of me...what ya got?

Yes , 1911 Turkey Reds also known as T3's and sometimes called "cabinet cards". They're 5 3/4 x8" and the set consists of 25 boxers and 100 baseball players. The set is numbered to 126 in the SCD annual price guide from 1989. Not sure where the extra card comes from.

edited to add that Mike beat me to the post and said it better as well.

Mike, I'm so jealous ! I've bid on a few but haven't come close to winning any yet. My problem is that I'm trying to collect so much graded material at once......funds become limited at times.

  • Mike,

Thanks...not really a Bears fan. Just a collector of NFL HOF autographs. Have 90% of the hall now.....getting down to the really tough one's:>}. Anyone have a Joe Guyon or Guy Chamberlain autograph laying around? Ha ha. Here's another one for you:

    Halas auto

Wish I could figure out how you guys manage to get those pics to show up directly in the post! Enjoy.

  • Actually, there's a post (2-10-05 at 3:23 p.m.) on the "testing forum" that has instructions abouting posting pics. I printed it off but haven't done it yet.

  • ^^ So you have 90% of the HOF autos? That's truly awesome...Have you considered putting the cards up on the registry? I've just started playing around with it since I had a Montana, Marino, Payton and Stallworth from years ago. I've bought several recently but just haven't gotten them graded yet.

    Hi Chris
Never have to say sorry to me...nice card! I never looked, I would assume that many have done the set on the PSA registry - are you talking about doing the set PSA graded. Will you be cracking the card and resubmitting it to PSA?
Looks like a great card! Good luck on the set.

was going to crack it but after seeing it in my hands wouldnt make sense image looks like a 7-8 !

i do like the black border sets like the 71 topps. seems alot harder cond wise.
  • Thanks, stone. I'll give it a try here shortly. My day job keeps getting in way!

  • Got this:

Its the program for the game aaron broke ruth's record.

  • Also got this bench rookie

    image

Not a huge fan of bench, but wanted to add him to my HOF rookies collection. Didnt want to overspend. Got this on Superbowl sunday....so, i got it for cheap!
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
majordanby, nice Bench! Why is that card a PSA 6? Do tell me the flaws, I am wondering why it seems PSA is so much tougher on pre 70's cards. I would like to think it is not because the market pays much more for vintage. Maybe I'm dreaming but PSA should have the SAME standards for grading as your Bench and a 1988 Donruss Steve Farr ......

  • soft, i'll let you know once i finally get it (should be tomorrow). I took that scan from the auction. I thought it was a nice looking bench and got it for $60. I bought it just when the superbowl began last weekend. I tried to get some more cards up for auction at that time. i went after an aparicio rookie (PSA 6) that was nicely centered. Someone else had the same idea....sniped me at the last second and got the card for dirt cheap!

Nice Scorebook! I have a few....I actually have a WS scorebook from the 20's - not a program.
And I agree, the Bench RC is real sweet for that kind of dough.

Nice stuff everyone!! Today I got mines!

also got a mint 9 Galen Cisco

The hairs you see on Maris's hat are due to the scanner not the card.

I should re do it but am lazy

The reverse is so so but the front is GEM
    Good for you.

OK, this will be my last T3 pickup for a while - of course unless I want to be sleepin the garage! My wife has no appreciation for this stuff!

    image

It's unusual to pick one up this clean from a dealer - very good guys - SCGaynor. In the world of T3's, this is about as good as it gets.

Those T3s are awesome. I've loved that set since I first read about it as a kid. I've contented myself with the reprint set, though i may someday own a single card from the real set image

  • my postal person stuff every last piece of mail, package, etc everything into my little box one day. The next day he leaves pratically nothing. I am going to start using my PO Box a lot more.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • Those T3's are tremendous. The set is in a league of it's own.

Last week the postman delivered some fun unopened items:

1987 Topps football box - $45 - Great value for the money. Tons of stars and rookies.

1978/79 Topps basketball packs - Pulled Erving, Jabbar, Parrish (2), Malone.

1979/80 Topps packs, 1986 Topps football packs - Nothing really.

I've been drooling over this recently:

If I ever do an upgrade and you want a PSA T3, I'll make sure you get it at what I have in it!
Mind you - this one and the Wallace that I posted are the "best" I have. Most are just acceptable with those pesky tack holes!

Let us know how you do on the packs. Good luck.

On the 57 pack, I will bet that most buy it for display - perhaps as an investment and never open it! It's worth way more unopened IMO.

    image

That is a sweet pack. My biggest regret - if you go to the BBCKid web and check out his "finds" - he has one with an old lady holding 8 pack cellos from 52T low series. He had them up for sale - pristine - in SCD for about 1750$ - just couldn't see spending it - one can easily get 7-10 grand for those packs today - they were in the best shape IMO! The fish that "I" let get away! image

  • The '57 pack in GAI 8 is one of the rarest packs from the 50's.

There's also a '58 Topps cello pack with Kaline on top for sale on Ebay now.

  • soft: I got the bench card today. Finally!

I am not sure why it got a 6 and not a 7. It does have a soft corner on the right, but everything looks great. the other corners are NM...the centering is fantastic...the edges look smooth. I compared it with my PSA 7 Ryan rookie and both cards are nearly identical.
