Valentine's Day Medal

Well, not really. Actually a marriage medal from 1810 with Cupid on the reverse. On this example (roughly 15mm though irregular) you can see that the artificial patina has begun to fail on the obverse. This is what tempts people to polish it off but it is the very thing that helps prove an original from a restrike. The patina usually holds up quite well over the centuries but is "iffy" on the smaller pieces.

  • Really interesting - seems well struck on the obverse.

    Cool.

But for the 19th century style of the portraiture on the obverse, I'd have taken that for an ancient.

I sure hope Cupid won his wrestling match with the giant lobster. image
