missing all the mints, but the types are there. pocket change from 1908. i had to start someplace.
these are all new coins to me by type. (is there a "i'm a happy clueless bewildered newb buying 'crap' from fun not profit" emoticon?)
thoughts? (sellers pics, not mine.)
was a late night on e-bay, woke up and i guess i had brought these home with me. at the worst, it's 5 more holes in a dansco 7070 filled, still need to buy the album though, ha!

I am working on a Dansco set of mostly G/AG Barber halves just because I like the look!

Did you intentionally get O mint marked quarter and half? Makes for a nice matched pair.
Being a bit of a nut myself, I'm attempting a year sets for every 25 year increment prior to my birth year. (Somehow that seems a little too self absorbed, but I'm sure you'll all forgive me.)
Since I was born in '63, I get some interesting years....1938 and 1913 where the nickels came in various varieties and designs. Somehow I think I'll be passing on the 1913 Liberty Nickel.

No, but there is a "Here's-a-genuine-collector-who's-got-exactly-the-proper-attitude" emoticon:
i was thinking of doing something similar with mint sets about 50 or 60 years apart starting with 1857. (the FE is what brought me to coin collecting more than any other coin design.)
i haven't even started yet, but want to incorporate the years where coinage changed (to me) in a perceptible way, like exchanging old coppers for new small cents, or when coinage went from silver to clad, a 64/65 set.
another "someday" set would be the first edition of each denomination with a dead president design paired with the previous series last look at "Liberty". A peace with an ike, an ihc with a lincoln, etc. last/first, in the best condition i could put together.
has anyone done this?

I believe what you are talking about there is similar to a scaled-down "transitional year" set. Our own Shirohniichan wrote an article about that in last November's Numismatist, but the link to it in his sigline has gone bad. I did dig up a PDF version of it, though.

(It's a little slow-loading on my end, but worth a look.)
Stick with the Dansco a while. I have fond memories of the Dansco 7070 type set days. Did it three times, but the first was the most fun (even though I had nicer coins the second time around).
Just have a peek at Baley's 7070 if you ever need inspiration, but beware- it's hypnotizing.
Stick with the less-expensive circ stuff a while. It has a character and a flavor all its own, and don't every let anybody sneer at your "low end" coins. They're "bread and butter" collector coins. I for one love 'em, even after playing in slightly bigger leagues for a while. When you're ready, you could always add the optional gold type page to your Dansco later if you feel the need to expand.
indeed, here is a snippet from someone who has done a registry set, "1908 was a transition year for gold, there are more mint types in this year than any other year, in fact there are 20 gold coins needed to complete this year's set."
alas, gold is what started me off on this long strange trip into collecting. i picked up a pound or so as gold broke $300 a while back, various bars, some maples and a couple AGEs. moved on to silver hoarding as well, then slowly began to realize that i enjoy collecting 'art on metal' more than hoarding.
i'm not ready to dump any great amount into coins just yet, but when the money is ready to be tucked away into coins as an asset (read as: slabable better grade pieces), i know i'll have plenty of places to go. right now though i'm getting enough enjoyment from spending a few dollars at a time (which is still probably 30% too much! ha) and learning along the way.
as for the 7070, i've drooled over a couple of them here, something warm and fuzzy about looking at a complete one. someday.
blue skies!
