Somethig odd with an eBay bidder and auctions he wins...or is this just coincidence

OK...this is really odd.

This guy marlin910 has been beating me on just about every Merc eBay auction lately -- the last one was a 1916-D Merc that looked....well, interesting. So he beats me by like $5 bucks again, and so I sent him an e-mail (contact member through eBay) busting his chops for continually spanking me on eBay. He replies and we trade a bunch of nice e-mails...he then even drop's me a note to let me know he received the dime and it looked OK, other than a nick, which we both saw on the picture.

So here's where it gets odd, the next day I get a second chance offer on this very same coin from the seller, and when I reach out to marlin910 to ask him "what's up?", never hear back...and never hear back from the seller either.

Last week I got another second chance offer on a coin he beat me out of, once again tried to make contact -- you guessed it, nada.

And then just now, yet another second chance offer on one he beat me out of....

In the e-mails we traded he sounded like an alright guy...said he was a dealer accumulating Mercs because he thinks they're going to POP, yet auction after auction he beats me on I get the second chance offer and there hasn't been enough time elapsed for him to pay for the coin, receive the coin, decide he doesn't want it and return it -- besides some of the auctions had "no returns" I think.

I looked at his feedback rating and he looks like exactly what he had said -- he's buying up Mercs -- and seems to be OK.

Is there something going on here or am I a target for eBay second chance offer scams...it would be odd that I would only receive these second chance offers on auctions I get beat by marlin910 -- but I've never received a second chance offer on any other auctions other than the ones I loose to him.

Thoughts?

marlin910 is the eBay id -- I don't want to flame the guy if it's legit, but this has been a incredibly coincidental chain of events if everything is on the level....

Are the "second chance" offers all coming from the same seller? Are you absolutely sure they are coming from the seller(s)?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes, sorry I missed it on the original post, image

No, apparently different sellers -- although how would I know they're coming from sellers? In the second chance offer e-mails it states to contact the seller via e-mail, yet not thinking that's safe I go to the actual auction and contact the seller via that button and never hear back from them?

    Here's the latest one:

    Dear mkbnh,
We saw that you are interested in "1921-D Mercury Dime MS64FSB Super Tough" - (Item# 3953423372) by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, this seller is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price. The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction or this seller has duplicate items for sale or the reserve price is not met in a Reserve Price. If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection. This is an eBay protected transaction and you can pay with trust. To purchase this item, don't reply to this mail, just contact the seller to discuss the price at apwmaria@aol.com. Thank you, eBay Inc.

Please respond to the question on eBay by clicking the button below.

    Thank you,

    beloontree

The eBay e-mail looks legit (I look at the source code) and all the links are links back to eBay?? Should I respond to one of them through the respond button?

The seller for the above auction was -- tuesdaynightcoins -- but the thank you says beloontree.
  • I don't see anything out of the ordinary. He doesn't win all the auctions he bids on and when he does win it's from a multitude of buyers.

I agree -- that's what makes this so odd...the guy really did sound like a nice guy...but when the second chance offers started and I've e-mailed him a few times about whether or not he returned the coins, or what's up, I never heard back.

Maybe I'm being targeted for second chance offer eBay scams?
  • Forward one of those emails to: spoof@ebay.com

They will let you know if its legitimate!
  • I always ignore second chance offers ...
    OR
I always go back to my bid if the winner didn't bid ie my bid $100 my max is $150 I lose to a bid of $155. Now the second chance offer comes in for me to buy it at my Max of $150. I only offer the $100 that would have won it if the other buyer (shill) stayed out. I've yet to have anyone take the lower amount ... Though it's only hapened a couple of times ..

Also if you go back to the web site and contact the seller through there. It maybe that these are just scam emails ...

OK. Sounds good. Let me do that now...thanks again.

Both the second chance offer e-mails looked different than one another...so I forwarded all the ones I got.

I also just tried to (re)e-mail marlin910 to ask him if had returned this coin or am I being targeted for second chance offer scams -- I hope he replies so I know the scoop.

Wow, already got a response from eBay on one of the ones I sent:

    Hello,

Emails such as this, commonly referred to as "spoof" or "phished"
messages and are sent in an attempt to collect sensitive personal or
financial information from the recipients. The email you reported was
not sent by eBay. We have reported this email to the appropriate
    authorities.

Looks like I am being targeted for these second chance scams...and it probably has nothing to do with marlin910...and it's just a freak coincidence -- and a REAL freak that I only get them from auctions that I bid on where he wins.
  • Although some are probably legit, I NEVER respond to second chance offers. I figure if I lost the auction the first time...I lost it!! Everyone in the world could see who bids on an aucton and could send you a second chance offer. The exception is a PRIVATE auction which I would NEVER consider bidding on...PERIOD.

    Forum member Kranky asked...

<< <i>Are the "second chance" offers all coming from the same seller? Are you absolutely sure they are coming from the seller(s)? >>

and you reply...No, apparently different sellers ...This appears to me to be a bogus Second Chance offer.

I think this was a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode.......as I recall
  • Yeah, this was a hoot, since mercdimeguy didn't get hurt. Ol Ben there asks for the ebay name when it's mentioned 3 times, then says looks like nothing out of the ordinary image Good thing Ben invented spectacles and started using them. At least he gave good advice on notifying ebay. This was the fishy-est deal ever.

What I want to know is, are you buying those raw on ebay? Your description does not mention a slab. If so, how's it going?

Hey, I heard back from marlin910 -- as I suspected after all of your advice -- there's a second chance offer scam going around...

    He just e-mailed me:

"I purchased the coin and have received it. I also got the same scam (same message) for the same dime I already purchased. Think I'll send it to Ebay."

He was getting a second chance offer for dimes he was already buying image Now that has to be the dumbest scammer alive...sending the guy who bought the dime a second chance offer.

Anyway, thanks again for all your advice -- maybe someone is tracking certain auctions that he and I happend to be bidding on and we're getting second chance offer scams...strange coincidence.
  • Second chance offers can only be completed through ebay. If you get an offer that says to contact the seller only, it is a scam. I have often offered items that I had duplicates of with this procedure. When a second chance offer is made, ebay creates a listing (with item #) which can easily be verified. Just plug the # into ebay's item search to check it out. You can also contact the original seller to verify the offer, or to request a picture, etc. If it is an item that you really want, there is no reason to be scared away. That would only let the scammers win. Be smart...not afaid.
