Horror Story

When I was about 6, my aunt gave me all the football and baseball cards her sons collected while growing up. Well, I obviously didnt have a clue on how to take care of them so alot of them ended up taped to my bike so I could have that "cool" motor sound when the cards slaped the spokes. Others went in my Tonka truck out in the rain with me and the rest ended up in my basement where my dog ended up wizzing on them. Eventually they all were tossed in the trash. I could only imagine what I had. My aunts sons are in their early 60's now, so my best guess would date the cards from the mid 50's through the early 70's. I only wish my aunt waited a few more years to give them to me. Anyone else have any similar stories to share?

When I moved to England for a year when I was 12, I sold all my cards to a card shop for $300 (I think). All commons from 1987 to 1992. I think I came out ahead on that one.

On a sadder note, I also traded a 1962 Topps Mantle All Star card to a shop for a box of Upper Deck Hockey - I think it was 1992. I was 12. If that shop is still open, and I ever get an excuse to go back to Denver, I will kick that guy in the nuts.

I remember it was 1982...winter...and I always took my cards with me to school to trade with friends, whatnot.

The box they were in somehow popped open and there were cards everywhere...wind blown and soaked...I remember running around trying to pick them up, crying...was a sad, sad day for me...it's wierd, but whenever I think about it I can close my eyes and remember it like it was yesterday...amazing how the memory works.

But the good memories outweight that one bad one 100000 to one, hands down.

Bill's is still in business and they have more vintage than new stuff, and a ton of oddball stuff.

Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972

I collected stamps for a few years when I was a kid - this is way before the explosion of prices - some of the albums were mint while others "cancelled" - I GAVE them away while in high school - didn't know there were price guides back then.

We had a flood in our basement, I saw a 1970 and 1972 ryan, koufax rookie float out the basement door, along with a ton of nice 50's commons. There was so much water, that when the ground water went back down, there was still 18-24 inches in my basement. All my modern stuff, 1989 upperdeck to 1991 Stadium club was a total "wash", but I managed to save about half of my vintage stuff. It could have been worse, much worse.
