1978 Topps Baseball Question

I was going through some of my 1978 PSA-graded cards today and noticed "(DP)" on the PSA card flip for #436 Vic Harris. I haven't seen it on any of the other cards. It is not a qualifier. I hope this isn't a stupid question but what does it stand for?

I borrowed this image from Guy's #2 set. It is a sweet PSA 10.

Usually, it stands for Double Print, meaning that the card appeared twice on the same sheet. It's weird that they would slab it like that - I've never seen it before. The 1952 Topps Mantle, is another example of a DP, but of course the flips for that card are not labeled as such. Good post.
  • My first thought was also double print but more than one of the cards in the set should have the label. I ruled it out.

Then I thought it meant deceased player. Maybe he died during the season. Nope. He was still alive when the card was printed.

Then I started hoping I had a variation. Nope. The all seem to have the label.

  • First off--gorgeous card. Second, PSA does this randomly on my cards. They put "NL ALL STARS" or some other variation that I don't ask for sometimes under the "variation" section. Clearly it means double-print, they had an idea to put that on the flips and perhaps didn't follow through. I believe the Harris is, indeed, a "dp".

First time I've ever seen that - but as DGF said, I have gotten back cards with the occasional description (NL All-Star, All-Star Rookie etc.) on the flip, which may not be on another PSA example of the same card I would have. I don't like seeing DP on there, seems unnecessary.

    I agree, ctsox.

In fact, that DP "modifier" actually draws unnecessary attention to the fact that it is, indeed, a double print. If PSA is going to take it upon itself to note the variations of our submitted cards, then maybe PSA could at least note the "SP's," right? Fortunately, 1978 places no premium on SP's, nor does it penalize DP's.

But if I were Guy, I'd send that back for a re-holder, with a revised flip.

I like the dead player qualifier. Whenever your homeboy dies, you should be able to send in for a new flip, free of charge. I would do that now with all my slabbed Bo Diaz and Tug McGraw cards.

And shouldn't DP be on the third line instead of after his name?
  • The guys at PSA were rushing outside for the smoke break, guess we all make errorsimage

    A double print indeed.
It seems PSA is not consistent in their posting of this information on the flips. But that should be of no real concern.
The 1978 set has 66 DPs, Somewhat caused when Topps upped the set size from 660, and still used 132 players/pictures per sheet.

interesting reading. Does this mean there are twice the amount of Vic Harris running amok than non Dp's?
