I didn't think there were many. Best I ever saw was an MS68 Morgan. Grades like 69 and 70 are only used for moderns. Of course a Morgan has to be almost perfect to get a 67 and the same coin would be a 69 if it was a Silver eagle.
I have another question. Has a Morgan been graded MS 70?
I recall that the first edition of the PCGS grading and counterfeit detection book has full color photos of MS Morgans ranging from MS60 to MS 70. They would not picture a coin as MS 70 if they had not slabbed it at MS 70 would they? If they have slabbed an MS 70 Morgan, I sure would like to know the history and current ownership of that coin.
There have been no 1880S Morgans in 69 sold at Heritage, and I'm too lazy to look up rest. The Numismedia retail price for an 1880S shown at Heritage is $46,880 with wholesale @ $37,500. There are 8 '80S MS-69's plus a few other dates. In MS 68 (which is still pretty nice!), they've gone from $2600 to around $5000 in the last few years. In PL69 I believe Legend had one recently, but I don't know the price, although in PL it's much more than $46,000 IMHO.

No 70's and we had the pleasure at the FUN show last month to have the #4 Registry Set of Morgan Dollars, which included the 69PL that jbsteven mentioned, consigned to PQDOLLARS and sold by Superior Galleries........if I remember correctly the price realized was $59800 and was purchased by LEGEND.
Sorry, thanks jbsteven--- I skimmed past the price. Gee they sold their Eliasberg MS68PL 1891(?) CC Morgan for "only" $100,000 if memory serves me. Now THAT was a nice (and uncommon coin)--and maybe even worthy of a 69 someday! The top material sure is going up in value.
Informative replies on the question of MS 69 Morgans and a couple of statements about no Morgans being graded MS 70. However, no one has yet responded to my question about the MS 70 Morgan pictured in the PCGS grading and counterfeit detection book. I am sure other forumites have seen the picture of the coin. Does anyone have any information on this mystery?

Perhaps those images are two coins, and the paticular side shown grades 70....?
I believe the only one I've heard of in 69 in the 1896-S which was part of the Eliasberg collection? Hmm. I think I've seen a picture of it too somewhere...
For those that don't know, I am starting pharmacy school in the fall.

I would love to see either of the 1878-S 68PL's
One is a PL.
One is also an 1896-S, which is a concept that my brain simply can't grasp.
