Why are there no good coins on ebay lately?

Is it my imagination, or are there few good coins for purchase on ebay? Plenty of common date stuff but no interesting dates in 2 1/2 or 10 dollar libs, certified by better TPG. Anything special out there, that isn't 5K or more?

There's some good stuff but not a whole lot of it. You really have to do some sifting lately. It's not your imagination! image

I've got my sniper set on four auctions ending this week. image Hopefully, I will win.image
  • I do my weeding process by:

    Are there pictures?
    Are there good, detailed pictures?
Is the seller trying to gouge me on the back end with S&H and insurance?
Has the coin been played with or otherwise abused or questionable?
Is the coin over priced to begin with?
Does the seller respond to email questions?
Does the seller have questionable feedback recently?
Does the seller have enough feedback?

And probably a few more. . . By the time I get through all of that, there isn't much in my watch list.

  • I agree with your method, especially as I do the same.

I am tired of seeing the cleaned, whizzed offerings of "ernie", too. He has great dates, but you look at the pics, and say, "why did I bother, I knew it would be crap"

I want to see some 1903-s morgans in xf 45 that are the real deal...
  • I have had this same thought lately but I figured it was because I was down to only two coins to finish my $2.50 indian collection. There have been plenty of them raw coins but hardly anything worth even looking at that has been graded.

Hasn't been much in my area of interest lately either. And, when I do find something, I keep getting sniped by all the bloodhounds that are crawling around.

Yep, ebay can be feast or famine. It seems to swing back and forth.

In other words, nothing interesting to *you*. I've picked up a couple nifty things in the past couple weeks, and am gearing up to fight braddick for another coin.

Already got it in. Let's just say that things don't always work out as well as we hope.

I had my sights set on a 56 Proof set that sold for .50 more than I had my max bid for. Why did I have to party?

Btw: That was the only decent thing I had seen in some time. Lately it's just seemed to be spam on ebay.

Glad to know I wasn't alone.

Is the market growing and sucking the good coins out?

All the fraud and coin doctors on eBay have chased the good buyers away from the bay. Hence with buyers gone the good sellers are leaving in droves. It's almost impossible to obtain a fair price on eBay today. Also eBay's greed in increasing fees is a factor.

  • I stick with buying from sellers on this board. The rest of the stuff on sleeze bay is junk.
  • So, if that is the case, are there any good websites for certified coins? (Speaking of ones other than Heritage, Legend, Premium, Alpine,David Lawrence,Harry Laibstain (sp?), Northern Nevada...

There are still some good ones out there - you just have to look. Here are two raw coins I brought in December and just got them back from PCGS. The Morgan is an MS66. imageimage
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?
  • what did the morgan grade ?

MS66. I thought I might get a PL, but PCGS did not agree with me. image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I know for me, IN GENERAL, it's much easier to sell any "better" coins OFF ebay. The right dealers are still paying very strong money for certain better coins, and with the general (huge emphasis on general) results on Ebay being quasi wholesale-retail, when you factor in the fees, there are many coins that don't make sense to toss up on Ebay any longer.

As well as low mark up items (right now I have a TON of pcgs ms/64 Morgans that will NEVER see Ebay) because as soon as you hit $50 on a starting price, the listing fees jump up, and that fee eats too far into any potential profit, which on coins like that doesn't make any sense.

Unless I have a two week lull in coin shows, my Ebay offerings have been limited, in comparison to the amount of material I've been selling total. I recently had a conversation with a larger wholesale dealer who has been tossing around the idea of Ebay for quite some time, and finally did some research on the subject to break down the numbers (fees etc.) and he started laughing when the subject came up. After they looked at the fees, and the addition of really having to use Paypal, it wasn't worth it for him to start. I think you are going to see more of this sort of thing in the future as well.

The assortment of listings is going to change and move towads the lower and higher end of the spectrum with that popular $50-$500 range becoming more and more limited. The fees really work against you on those items, unless you absolutely ripped something somewhere.

part of the lull on eBay is due to the time of year. the hobby seems to be conditioned to move slow in the first few months each year while collectors lick their wounds from the holiday season, await refunds from the IRS and watch the coin rags/online dealer reports/message boards/newsletters to see how the early year big shows go and where the market might be heading. i think it's partly some fallout from the continually rising prices and a lot of subconcious hype that things may tumble at any moment.

with all that said, there are still some big coins listed. just last night i noticed that there are two PCGS holdered 1971-S Jeffersons graded PR69DCAM. at less than 30 in the pop report, that's odd since they rarely ever show up. i think things will loosen up by early March as tension eases and the "Big Dump" continues.

Its there but ya REALLY got to dig deep......sometimes simple keyword searches aren't enough, you have to take a category - all 300 to 3000 items and go thru them 1 at a time.........

I will admit I also have been finding little - perhaps 5-10 items per week that are worth watching of which I may end up bidding on just 2 or 3......but I probably spend 30 minutes to an hour per day doing my searches....so ending up with 10 items per week and spending 4-8 hours per week shows just how little I'm finding! But everyonce in a while, its all worth it as one finds a true gem....

Agreed. Where is that 1794 dollar with a BIN price of $5,000 that someone cleaning out Grampa's estate keeps forgetting to list?image

Let's face it,at least as for quality coins, EBAy has turned into a sellers market, like it or not.
