for those of you that Fedex out of the country......

What item description do you use. I had a package rejected by Fedex that was going to South Africa. I described the contents as "Numismatic Supplies". This was to vague for the counter worker and they wanted more. So, wound up telling them it contained a coin, but I didn't want to draw attention to that because of the risk of theft. They changed the label to "coin supplies" Later that evening I was called and notified that my package was rejected by the International Rep., and that I could not Fedex coins to SA. She had opened the package to see what it was. Today, I spoke to another Int. Rep. at their toll free number and asked what I could do. We decided that since the coin was no longer useable currency in that country, and was over 50 yrs old, to call it an antique penny. Will this work?? What do you guys suggest??? The buyer is footing the shipping and I have his Fedex ID number. He doesn't want to use Global Priority which is my preference.

  • Are the coins SA currency? If they are not, then there should be no problem either from Fedex or from customs (you just got an over-zealous inspector).

  • Maybe mix in the word 'collectible'?

I usually call them "tokens" and have never had a problem.

  • I've never used anything but the U.S. Postal Service and always label it 'medals'.

  • I don't use FEDEX anymore - at all - ever again. I had a very bad experience with them with a shipment into Canada ten years ago (that's right 10 years ago) The bad experience cost me bigtime and was my one "not cheap" mistake.

Don't use an "unrecoverable" description of the item - period. If FEDEX won't take the parcel tell your buyer that and go another route. If your buyer doesn't agree cancel the sale. If you ship an "antique coin" or a "medal" and end up making a claim you are going to get your buns toasted at about 5,000 degrees C and not even get a "thank you" afterwards. A "false" description of contents voids all carrier liability PERIOD dot dot dot.

Been there, done that and it cost me 72K BEFORE legal fees.
