When do you bid in online auctions??

Do you enter your bids days or weeks in advance, or wait till just before online bidding closes?

cheers, alan mendelson

If I'm sure I want the item I set the snipe a day or two ahead of the auction close.

  • I always bid the max i want to pay for the coin whenever is convenient for me..sometimes early sometimes late...and then i just wait for the outcome..i have been surprised many times and have gotten great coins at way below my max bid and other times have been completely blown away by a price i felt was too high..but seldom have i had second thoughts caused i bid the max, took my best shot ...

If I want to win I bid in the last seconds. No other approach seems to work with any degree of success.
    When in doubt, don't.

Change the question slightly.....exclude ebay and think of internet auctions for Heritage, Superior, and Teletrade.

Now, WHEN do you bid? Early? Mid? Late?
I don't believe you can "snipe" those.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Late, Later, After they close. It seems that the ones I really want somebody else wants a little more. That's were the after they close comes in, go looking somewhere else. The big thing is don't get locked into having to have that one only.

At the end or as late as possible.

  • When I said in my original post "when online bidding closes" I was referring to auctions such as Heritage... not eBay. So "sniping" is out, in the "eBay sense."

so... to be more exact: when do you place your bid in these "none ebay" online auctions that are usually followed by live floor bidding?

    thanks, alan mendelson

I usually place a max bid at the beginning of the auction. If the snipers want to overpay Good Luck to Them.

With TT, Heritage, and others, it's more important to have picked the right increment to maximize your chance of getting the coin. But since TT (and I'm sure the others) have so-many reserved coins (and many owned by the house), it's pretty hard to know where you stand and how to bid. Just as easy to put in your best bid and forget about it. The odds are stacked so heavily against you it's sort of comical, esp at TT.
