pedigree option- what to make of it

Now that PSA started doing their pedigree service again ( you get to put your name on the flip, it cost 5 bucks per card)

How does everyone feel about it?

Is it mostly an egomaniac thing to do?

While one can argue that such pedigrees like the one on the t-206 PSA 8 Wagner adds to the value of the card, i have yet to see any other pedigrees add anything at all "harris collection" for example.

Actually if there were to be just one card with "problems" with your name on it, it might make the rest suspect as well.

Does anyone think the thought on leaving a legacy like that would be apreciatted by others in the future?

I personaly think its silly, except for truly rare cards ( less than 5 ) where everything about them including prior owners would be of interest the other collectors.

  • It can be a big thing in the world of comic book collecting, where the term pedigree is used to designate a large collection of high grade, vintage material that comes from one specific source, usually from the original owner. Comics from a pedigree collection typically garner a premium, so CGC, the comic grading equivalent of SGC, provides pedigree designations on their holders. I don't really see the benefit in card collecting, where this particular tradition does not seem to have taken root.
  • Doesn't add anything to me except in the most extreme cases like the one you site. But what would be more interesting would be who submitted the card on the flip. That might make for some very serious price secrepiciencies between cards.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to do something like that. The focus should be on the card, not the prior owners. Someone would really have to be egotistical to want his name on each of his cards.

  • it might hurt if you need to sell them. I wouldn't want someone's else name on my PSA's. But I might be the only who cares about thatimage

    LordThanos,

I didnt know that sort of thing was big with comics, I know with coins its pedigree matters as well.

there is a very small number of cards that i wouldnt mind a pedigree, recently discovered cards, maybe some rare variation in high grade, some small find like the craker jack find that sgc graded recently.

Of course this is for rare pre war cards, but maybe someone out there is really proud of their high grade card and believes its extra special sort of a PSA 11, who knows?

This seems the same as having an autograph personalized - which I believe detracts from the value.

It might be nice if someone had a great collection that they never intended to sell.

But wouldn't it just be cheaper/easier to have a binder/box personlized?

Well, there are several cards out there with the Charlie Sheen Collection pedigree on them. I notice from the pop report that many are 1914 Cracker Jacks. I'm not sure if there are any others. In that case, I would pay a premium to have that card. They are sort of like 1 of a kinds and I've always been a big fan of his. Also, it makes for good conversation when your showing friends and relatives your collection. If anybody famous collects cards, it makes sense to have them with the pedigree. It instantly adds value to the collection if they want to sell them down the road.
