Do you think this card deserves a 8?

I alternate sending batches of cards to BGS and PSA to get a balance. Recently sent in a 84 Fleer Clemens just to see how high it would grade. BGS assigned it a 7 and it's being sent back to me right now. Here are the sub-grades:

Centering 6, Corners 8.5, Edges 9, Surfaces 9

The centering is obviously what killed it. I didn't think it looked that bad. You think it's worth resubmitting to PSA? All the other areas are obviously fine.

  • THat is one of the pitfalls of Beckett grading. 6 for centering is pretty harsh. I would guess PSA 8 maybe a n 9 if it fall in the centering specs.

That's a nice looking card. Looks like a 9 to me... but I have been wrong many times before! Good luck!

Brian, was you or James where we discussed the centering issue of that card? We couldn't figure out where the card should start, or the centering of the name with the bottome of the card? 7 aint bad, but better luck with PSA I think.
  • Wasn't there a big discussion about centering for the 84F product? does the bottom border start underneath the word pitcher or is the whole white space the bottom border?

Yeah, I started the discussion regarding the centering of the 84 Fleers awhile back, but that was in regards to consistency within PSA when it came to top/bottom. I knew the centering wasn't perfect with this particular card, but I didn't think they'd penalize me so severely for it though.

Well, I guess that answers it. I can't believe how anal retentive they are about the centering. I'm cracking this thing once it comes back. In fact, there's a whole mess of cards from the BGS batch that got killed due to centering alone that I'm cracking and sending to PSA. So much for my experiment going back and forth between the two services. I've highlighted those that took a real bath with centering that might grade higher with PSA.

Sub-grades as follows: Centering, Corners, Edges, Surfaces)

    1986-87 Topps Patrick Roy 8.0 (7.5, 8.5, 8.5, 8.5 )
    1986-87 O-Pee-Chee Mario Lemieux 8.0 (7.5, 8.5, 9, 8.5)
    1986-87 O-Pee-Chee Patrick Roy 7.5 (7, 9, 9, 9) *BUMMER*
    1984-85 O-Pee-Chee Steve Yzerman 7 (6, 9, 9, 9) *BUMMER*
    1980-81 Topps Wayne Gretzky 5.5 (4.5, 8.5, 8.5, 8.5) *BUMMER*
    1980-81 Topps Ray Bourque 7.5 (7, 8.5, 9, 8)
    1979-80 Topps Wayne Gretzky 7.5 (7.5, 7.5, 8.5, 8)
    1973-74 Topps Bobby Orr 6.5 (6, 7, 8.5, 7) *BUMMER*
    1970-71 Topps Brad Park 8.0 (8, 8, 8.5, 8.5)
    1970-71 Topps Gordie Howe 8.5 (8.5, 8, 8.5, 8.5)
1968-69 Topps Bernie Parent (0.0 - WTF?) *MAJOR BUMMER*
    1968-69 Topps Gordie Howe 6.0 (5, 8, 7, 8.5) *MAJOR BUMMER*
1968-69 Topps Bobby Orr (0.0 - WTF?) *BUMMER*
    1991 Topps Desert Shield Roger Clemens 9.0 (9, 9, 9, 9.5)
    1991 Topps Desert Shield Wade Boggs 8.5 (8, 8.5, 9, 9) *BUMMER*
    1991 Topps Desert Shield Wade Boggs 9.0 (9, 9, 8.5, 9)
    1991 Topps Desert Shield Randy Johnson 9.0 (9, 8.5, 9, 9)
    1991 Topps Desert Shield Randy Johnson 9.0 (8.5, 9, 9, 9)
    1985 Donruss Roger Clemens 8.5 (8.5, 8, 8.5, 8.5)
    1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens 7.0 (6, 8.5, 9, 9) *BUMMER*

I'm actually distress to see that ORR and Parent rookie didn't grade. I haven't gotten the cards back yet to see the reasons why, but the HOWE of the same year came out of the same set that I put together nearly 25 years ago from a wax box. I knew a dealer back then who acquired a few of them and for heck of it, we cracked them open and put together a few sets. I KNOW FOR SURE these cards are NOT trimmed since I pulled them out myself.
  • I don't beckett anything anymore. I get their price guides because I feel I have too. But BGS and BCCG and whatever else is BS to me!!

It's tough to tell from a scan, and especially tough to tell through a screwdown holder - but that looks like a nice card. However, I bet you receive an OC qualifier from PSA on it. The L/R centering looks to be your main issue.

Just an update. Just got this card back from PSA. It crossed over from a BGS 7 to a PSA 8.
