What's classic coins are likely to see Pop increases near term?

There are a few classic coins like early copper large and half cents and also half dollar bust coins which many collectors prefer raw. As a result the population reports do not provide a very good estimate of the number of coins that exist in a given grade.

In recent months there has been a rather significant increase in the price of XF and especially AU bust half dollars in PCGS and to some extent NGC holders. I don't have any old PCGS population reports handy for the bust halfs, but am curious if there has been any notable increase in the population for the bust halfs as listed in the PCGS population reports.

Also have noticed a lessening of the number of PCGS/NGC bust halfs being offered on eBay lately so maybe there hasn't been much of an increase.

Has anyone seen any classic series which has had a significant population increase lately? Any series likely to have one?

If you consider mid-19th century classics, then gold eagles and half eagles and double eagles between 1850 and 1865 will show an increase due to the gold shipwreck hoard off of Louisiana in 1865.

  • Michael, my comments on the bust half dollars applied to the entire series, not any specific date. So if you could provide the series total for XF and AU coins, that would be great. Thanks for your help.

This is easy. Any coin that Contursi currently has in inventory and is not yet maxed out.

well, as soon as I get around to searching my mint sealed souvenier bags of 1796 and 1804 quarters,
and cherry all the MS68 and MS69 ones, there will be lots more lower graded ones in MS60-67 slabs..
