Ken Griffey Jr meeting

I meet him this Wednesday at the beach grill at the Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas. I was standing in line to get lunch for my son and I when I noticed he was standing in line directly in front of us. He was standing alone and as he turned around I extending my arm to shake his hand. He shook it with a smile and seemed kind of surprised that I recognized him because he had sunlasses and a hat on. When he went to pay for his food he brought out a wad of hundreds that was about two inches thick. The server was a bit short with him saying he couldn't pay cash and that he had to put his purchase on his room charge. It was amazing to me that it seemed that I was the only one who recognizes him in the crowd. It was a great postive moment with a classy player that has one of the purest swings in the game. I just thought I would share it with everybody.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Griffey in the past, most of which I think can be attributed to his relationship with the press. Nice to hear that he can be civil with fans (despite what sports talk radio would have you believe).

Great post - you should have asked him to autograph one of his Bennies and give it to you.

Willie - I have met you a few times and you need to continue to work on your spelling and grammar. Also, as all know, your self esteem has been a constant issue for years - and thus impacted numerous collectors basis your snotty demeanor and lack of gratitude. Understand - Griffey JR should have been extending his hand and gratitude in your direction. He should have also picked up the tab for your eats. Keep steady - Willie. Hope all is well.

Heh griffey should have picked up the tab for the meal? Hmm why, because he makes a ton of cash?

I've heard a lot of positive stories regarding junior, most remembering was the family he met, who's father was in the NYFD....the father gave junior a NYPD shirt (I think? it's been awhile since I heard this story on ESPN), and junior was taken aback because someone gave something to him, instead of people always with their hand out....I think griffey even paid for the family to come watch a game in seattle. The griffey's and this family kept in touch, and this firefighter was one of those lost in the 9/11 attacks. Junior called personally to offer condolences, and then had the family out again.

Also, anyone remember how he handled the 500 HR ball? Gave the guy a week's vacation to the all star game, field level seats for the game and home run derby, the works.

I really think griffey is a class act.

Axtoid - Griffey is a solid citizen, and one of the dudes who have "saved" the fan interest in the game in the post-strike era.

Humor is pointed at Willie Mays......get it now???

  • You should have got a graph on something. I would have liked to see it. I have never met a pro sports athlete although once I pretty positive I saw Pedro Martinez at my sisters Graduation. (Boston College- His girlfriend was graduating). I have heard that Griffey is a Class act and I wouldnt want to be bugged by the press either. Thibs
