Somebody trying to scam me?

Hey guys, let me know what you think. I won 3 boxes of 05 Heritage that ended this morning, all for under $60. I asked the seller if I could pay for and pick up the boxes in person (he lives withing driving distance), and he just responded with:

Sorry, I need to have payment soon, so that i may place and pay for my order through my distributor. Thanks though..

Is it just me or shouldn't that order have been placed long ago? Anybody know anything about this?

-Jeff

  • I'd pay him. What's the worst that can happen? You know where he lives!

  • Its possible if he does not get his cards direct that he has not already paid his distributer. He also may have a COD arrangement with them.

Im sure you know this already, but I always use my Amex Blue card or another similar credit card for all my online purchases so I am covered just in case a seller flakes out on me.
  • I hope that he's not trying to scam you because I bought a box from the same guy. I saw your name on the sales yesterday and knew better than to bid against youimage I already sent him money, though.image

    Mac-

I would be hounding that guy pretty hard. I've sent him a couple of emails, and the only response Ive gotten so far was the one I posted basically demanding his money and ignoring my concerns. I tried looking him up in the phone book and online, and his name isn't listed in either. Just a heads up for now though - could be nothing serious, but I tend to be a little overly cautious on the bay.
  • Thanks for the advice. I'll email and write to him. I don't know what else to do, except complain to ebay, but's a too early for that. I only sent the money on Wednesday. He's been on ebay for 5 years and he's sold over 20 Heritage boxes in the last week, but it's a bit unnerving that he's selling stuff he doesn't have and placing the order when the money comes in. Please let me know if you hear anything else on this.

  • Just the other day, someone started a post about not wanting buyers to pick up winnings in person etc. Some people just feel weird about this. Perhaps if he knew you were the beloved and infamous psa message boards mudflap, he'd change his mind...
    I dunno...
doesn't sound like a scam... just a bit weird.
I hope you don't have to wait long to get your heritage boxes...
Please follow up and let us kow how it turns out.

I don't plan on picking them up in person. The fact that he hasn't emailed anything other than wanting his money is what made me kind of wary, not to mention the fact that he needed to "place his order with is distributor". I was thinking they should have been ordered a while ago. Should be interesting however it turns out.

I have better things to do than visit the prison anyways.
  • maybe he makes money off shipping??
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • maybe he just wants the winning bidder to send payment????

So far, he hasn't done anything to prove to me that my money is safe when I send it to him. The only thing he's done is placed auctions on ebay - he hasn't even ordered the cards yet.

Seller is avoiding me - Mac, get your Paypal back ASAP. Scammer, and report him to ebay.
  • Well, uh . . . he only accepts money orders, so that's what I sent.image I've sent him the dough already. I just emailed him, I'll let you know what, if anything, I hear. I may need for you to get me the number for the local prosecutor's office, so I can call the consumer fraud division. Not that it will do any good . . . .image Maybe I should have sucked it up and paid the retail rate. Live and learn.

  • alot of things are done without actually having the goods. i was checking into starting an ebay store with a whole sale warehouse. the way this works is that i list the auctions and when the item is purchased i send the order to the warehouse and they would dropship it to the customer. this could bring about backorders though. i would venture to say you will be okay.
  • Thanks, Ranger. I appreciate the reassurance. I just wish he'd respond to the emails.

  • Here's what he said this morning: "I have a problem right now with my distributor on a case of sweet spot football that has not been provided as yet, and I am behind on shipping rookies and stars.. I do this on the side part time, i have a regular job...
I am going to offer refunds on the sweet spot because he at first sent the wrong product, then when i sent it back he has not been able to provide the sweet spot football for me because the factory is sold out i beleive. I am awating a refund from him as i paid him 2500 for a case i have not received.. I am in the process of getting heritage through someone else."
