LANLord's 9137 post giveaway ******* Winner's name in first post! ********

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭✭
The winner, picked out of a hat by my wife, mere minutes ago, is ****Kidd****. Congratulations.

I also did a second drawing of YNs only, I don't know what I will send yet, but I'll figure out something nice. YN winner **** NotLogical**** Congratulations.

I've never done one of these, so be patient. If this explanation is not clear, I'll edit this message to clarify, but not to change the rules or remove anything from the list of coins.

I never took the time to do one of those 1000, 2000, 3000 etc post giveaways, so I thought I'd choose a nice even number such as 9137 as a great point in time to do one.

It's open to anyone, however I'm sure some of the loftier collectors on the boards probably won't give a hoot about these coins, still others may find these a nice giveaway.

On the day (or in case of brainfade, the closest day I can remember) that I make my 9137th post, I will take all the names of the people that have qualified entries on this thread and choose, by drawing a name from a hat, the winner of the following group of coins.

What is a qualified entry? One entry per forum ID. An entry that explains how you would put together a set of coins and numismatic related materials (books, pamphlets etc) to send to the young numismatist of your choice (either a person on these boards or the son/daughter, grandson/granddaughter, niece/nephew etc of one of our board members).

Hopefully this will turn into a cascade giveaway, I'll give something to the winner, and the winner gives something to a YN.

So if you want to enter, please list your gift pack to a YN, if you wish to enter the name of the YN of your choice, feel free, but not necessary.
If you're a YN, you may want to get your name on this message to get visibility to the winner.

List of coins:

1882-cc dollar - VF+
1855-o half dollar - VG10
1931-s dime - EF
1939-s dime - AU
1912 nickel - F15 (probably VF, full strong LIBERTY)
1865 3 cent nickel - F
1881 3 cent nickel - F
1971-s blue envelope Ike dollar - MS

I hope this is clear enough, and I hope you enjoy.

    Heres my plan.........

I would start a YN(assuming that said YN had never been exposed to coins) with a nice Dansco album, with perhaps an example of each type. Nothing high end, but no junk either. Just a nice clean(not cleaned image ) example of a half cent, large cent and maybe some of the other obsolete coins that he or she may not know ever existed. Along with that, maybe throw in a large mix of coins, a large lot(US and World) that they could use for study purposes to learn grading and proper handling. Throw in a recent Redbook, a good magnifying glass, a good 10X loupe, some 2x2s. Some other good books like a Cherrypickers guide, maybe a few small books that focus on individual coin series, or the history of US/World coinage would be a good addition.

I don't really know any YNs and none of my nephews seems real interested in coins, so I will offer my gift pack to maybe someone on the boards knows who might be appreciative.

My gift pack would include a nice assortment of US and world coinage in circ, MS, and proof states. The exact make-up of the pack is undetermined, but would be varied.

This is a great giveaway. I only wish I could get my nephews interested in coins.

I'm a YN, and I'd enjoy any of those coins on that list really. (Of course the CC is the coolest image).

If I was setting up something for another YN, I'd likely include a Red Book (Spiral back of course), and likely some of the more interesting coins, commens, FE cents, bust coinage.

  • Ok here is how I did it with my nephew Sean. I let him take any coins up to 10 I have left out on my computer desk. It has been anything from a set of 1982 lincolns, morgans, SAE's really pretty much anything including darkside. This seamed to really get him going and into liking coins. For the past 4 christmas he has gotten someting coin wise from me. Including a partial set of unc Lincolns from 1909 to date but he has to fill in the rest of them. A set of state quarters which he has fathfully kept filling since he has gotten it. A loop and a red book and some books aimed towards younger coin collecting kids (YN's) He also knows he can call me anytime to ask about coins or currency. So I hope that qualifies me for entry into the contest.

Oh ya for my first 2 years in here anything I won in a giveaway he got as a gift from the group.

Here's my current gift pack to a YN (my 11 year old son):

A Sacagawea coin folder, the coins to fill it, an error penny, my old Dansco Lincoln album, and handfuls of wheat pennies to sort through and put in the folder. I also need to add the Red Book and a magnifying glass. Since he likes foreign coins I've been pulling out extras that I have. Once I upgrade some of my type coins I also plan on letting him have some of those.

He's been to 2 coins shows with me and has done better than I have. At the last show he busted his butt off doing chores to earn $10 for the show. He ended up getting about 15 coins he liked plus a few freebies. I actually ended up trading him for one of his freebies. He has also taken some of my coins to school for show and tell. It's pretty neat that he's interested in coin collecting.

Here would be my gift pack:

I Dansco Type Book (7070) and a Harris book of the YN choice (choose from Buffalo nickels, Indian cents, Mercury dimes, or any current series). I would include a few coins to start the Harris book and a few coins to start the Dansco. I would choose these for 2 reasons. The Dansco gives a great was of learning the different coins of our country, but can be difficult/expensive to fill. The Harris books will be easier to fill holes giving the sense of accomplishment. I would also think a Red Book should be included along with the PCGS book on grading and detection counterfit coins.

Cool giveaway and good luck to the selected YN.
  • If someone picks me that would be really neat. Next to my Dad, the people here have really been important to me with collecting. Thanks!!

  • I would get them a Type coin album and start it with a few coins and then pick an easy series to complete (like wheat lincolns) and give them a handful of wheaties to start out with. Maybe a nice proof birth year set for them as well. Also supply them with a Red Book and a book on grading. I know this isn't original but it's the first thing that came to my head.

  • The YN in my house is my 4 year old son. To get him into coins i just spent time with him and included him in my hobby. Our once a month trip to the coin shop is alot of fun for him. I / We collect every type of U.S. coinage, so when we get to the shop we pull out the list to see what we still need. I set out all the ones we find that we need and let him decide which ones we are going to buy with the money we have to spend. I let him decide what he likes and what we will complete first. my 12 yr old nephew likes coins also, and he has decided that wheat cents are what he will finish first. I bought my nephew a redbook and my son has the previous year book to look at for reference.( i get a new one every year )

YN here. Thanks in advance to the person who may pick me. I like that 1855-o half dollar - VG10 that would be a nice addition to my just started seated Liberty half set.

If I was setting up for a YN I would give some type coins to them to sample and keep so they can maybe get interested in the coin that is appealing to them. Also, a nice 5x magnifier to view the coins and grade them.

    Nice giveway LanLord.image

Well, I'll tell you what I did with my son (notlogical). He was 6 when the state quarter program started. It seemed like a perfect fit. So, he and I just started looking for the "new" state quarter in my change. We had such a good time and in the process I fell in love with coins. I had collected lots of things as a kid, comic books, anitique bottles, cards, etc. but coins always interested me but I had no support or interest from my parents so I never "went there". Until, my son came along and the state quarter program. I am someone who did become a collector because of the state quarters and now, so is my son. He amazes me with what he knows and "who" he knows in the business. Sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock.

the next thing we did was stumble across these forums! It has been an awesome, awesome experience. He and I cruising the posts reading, learning and discovering this wonderful hobby. And along the way, making friends. We both have learned more from these boards than anything we could have learned independently through books alone.

And then, the giveaways, like this one just turned him on. After his first "goodie bag" came from Frattlaw after his 4th of July giveaway he saw the variety and beauty and in his words "coolness" of coins of all types from all over the world besides the US. The generosity, helpfulness and kindness of people here has been absolutely amazing. When we joined our local coin club it was a let down because nothing could improve on what we had here on the boards. (well, except in person people seem to restrain themselves and their opinions a bit more which isn't a bad thing with a YN aroundimage)

sorry if I've gone on and on but it is easy for me to do about how I feel about this hobby and the people both my son and I have met here on the boards and what they have done for and mean to both of us.

So, in a nutshell, Start out simple. Join the CU forum. Let the YN find what he wants (even if it looks dumb to you). Get a good loupe, a redbook and most of all... Do it together!!!

Oh, and I guess you can imagine who will get the prize if I win. The greatest little YN I know (and that is a totally unbiased opinion BTW imageimage )

Not to copy GAcoin guy, but my initail thought was a type set ( Maybe even a whitman 20th century- (Also has a space for bith year set) as a great introdution to coins.

    Red book
    5x and or 10x loop
Example of error coin (minor off center etc)
    Red seal $2 bill.
Some pre 1964 halves/quarters to understand the unique sound that change used to make.

  • I am a YN and I first started plucking scrap Mercury dimes into an album at 35 cents a pop, those were the good old daysimage . After I got most of the common dates, I set out to get the keys, no not the 1916 D or the 21's, but the high priced 1931-D, 1926-S and the 1916 P and S. I loved going to the coin shop and digging through the scrap trays for hours until my hands were black and so did my mom image By the time I finished the book with no 16 D, I was old enough to get a job. This is when I was able to put that 1916 D on layaway and finish my set. I work 30-40 hours a week, still maintain a 4.0 and spend every dime I have on this habit, I mean hobby. I have spent well into 5 figures, all my hard earned money, on coins and I am only 16. I have never met another kid my age who collects coins, so I don't know what other kids collect. My mom thinks I am crazy and she grounded me when she found out I bought a MS66 1907 Barber Half from DLRC. I love my babies/coins. I would rather spend my money on coins than worthless Pokemon cards or other crap that I will never use.

Realizing of course that they first must all blow all their coin money on women for a few years, only to come crawling back to the hobby wondering what the "bleep" did I do that for?image

  • I guess the biggest gift to give a YN would be is to help instill a yearn for more knowledge. Although I don't have one (kinda wish I did), I would recommend a Metal Detector and a copy of the Red Book. That way not only can he get out on a nice day and bond with a family member or friend, he can "earn" his own coins and then do the research looking them up!!

I'm willing to send my recent 2004 Red Book and a $20- paypal payment to your account toward a purchase of a Metal Detector. Maybe some of the other members wh don't have much to contribute could join in if they thought that this was a good idea also.

  • Please enter me - all good ideas. Thanks for chance - good idea for a contest!

I have used some of the mentioned ideas with my YN/Oldest grandson. The first thing he does now when he comes over now, is to ask if he can work on 'his collection' - or metal detect. Last time he was here, I sent him home with a starter package of last year's Redbook, some coin storage flips and flops, a container to hold his coins, and a few other odds/ends - plus coins of course.

I like to 'seed' the coin rolls with coins that are needed for his books.

He also has been getting coins for every birthday and Christmas - and I just mailed him a new Whitman/one he didn't have. I also taught him to 'save' coins by starting with his (and his family members) birthdates. I told him to read the Redbook at least once per week (but Bible first), and paperclipped the basic pages/for basic starter coins for him. I also showed him the commememorative section/paper clipped to perk his interest. And I taught him how to pick the nicer coins from circ and to use gloves and hold properly by edge.

His next package will probably include a nice package of all kinds of misc. coins, more supplies, and another Whitman or two - depending upon his interest level. He is only about 10 years old, so I am going to 'gradually' incorporate him with knowledge and coins, so that he doesn't feel overwhelmed - and lose interest. I always try to make it exciting by showing him my latest and greatest.

I also showed him the kid's section of the US Mint website - which I will reinforce again, next time he is here. Unfortunately, I don't get to see him that often. I will also introduce him to some darkside coins - and he will get a few of those also, so that he can see all of the different designs.

I generally don't like to 'mail' these things to him - because I want to see where his interest level is - AND I like to give him a few lessons about what he is getting, so that he understands what it is and what he needs to do to continue on the path of knowledge for collecting purposes.

  • please enter my two yn....wheatgirl (11 yo) and buffaloboy (7yo)....i would give a yn some circulated type coins...it is the best way to show how coins have changed over the years....i still like hearing one of them say...."here is one that is older than grampa!"

Here we go again with someone asking what something means. There is this coin forum dictionary that someone will jsut have to publish. When I asked the other day someone posted a fairly complete list. I suggest someone find a place to put a permanent dictionary or write a pamplet and publish it and get rich.
Don't enter me in the contest. I just gave away some coins to get rid of surplus.
