countermark question on spanish cob

I have a Spanish-Colonial 8 real cob-- probaby 1600's--- where on the face of it is a small, square incuse and inside that, a small cross or 'X' with a pellet in one of the angles. Anyone seen a countermark like this? Doesn't look Oriental, but maybe it is

it's pretty small but definitely some kind of countermark
