That's been going on for years. They way we used to do it is , you pick a product ie 2000 Bowman Chrome. There would be 5 of us. Everyone picks a pack. Open it up. The highest most valuable card wins everyone's pack. The worse pack or the loser we say would pay for all 5 packs. That's the big time gambling way. Another variation is everyone would pay for their own pack before opening them and the winner/best card takes all the packs. In case of a tie you pick again....make up the rules before you play so no arguments arises. Have a price guide ready. It's fun; addictive, and can cost you a lot of money. Unless you win or the middle guy most of the time, then you made out. The higher the product $, more dangerous, but to each his own.
We used to do this after the store closes and bring beer at a friend's shop (no longer in business) and make a Saturday night of it. We would do products like 90 Leaf and 89 UD and 92 Fleer Cello Baseball when the Rookie Sensations were on fire back in 1992. They were 6 of us. The loser would pay $30- $45 a pop depending on what product we did. In retrospect; it was a waste of money.
At the shop I go to everyone gets to keep one card from their pack. We also don't go by card value, we usually pick a stat like most career homeruns or RBI's, or some random number like card number closest to 12.

we used to use the card #'s.. like whoever got the highest card # or lowest card # wins.. hell, i dont want the guy who pulls the most valuable card to win, i WANT to WIN the most valuable card!
I played for years at my local shop with the owner. We'd grab a box and start cracking pack for pack. Highest listed card wins. Usually $5.00 or more to win but that can be agreed on b4 the game. If there is no obvious winner you go to the next pack and the winner of that round gets the previous tie. In the begining we used to count up the packs and I would pay for only what I lost. But for the last four years or so we play for the box. Biggest stack wins at the end...He gets really pissed when I win 3 or 4 boxes in a row. But he gets to run my credit card when he wins a few....Fun way to kill an hour or so. Bob
We used to do it every Friday it was for every card opened you paid for your own packs, and we would pick a stat like most HR for career or a spceific season. Highest career BA was always a fun one. Of course depending on the category there were a few magic bullets we learned to recogonize when this one was pulled he was just shown to all and unless someone else pulled him that was it. When I played lots Career HRs was Mike Schmidt. Henderson was the Bullet for SBs. Ryan was for Wins at the time. Marino for most TDs
The funniest I ever saw was a pack war run by a store (prizes to the winner, everyone got to keep their packs) where the selected stat was fewest rushing yards. A couple people pulled QBs who had negative rushing yards, and one guy would not accept that -7 yards is not fewer than -12 yards.
