What is your biggest obstacle in owning the collection of your dreams.

I was thinking on this this morning.
In my case, I love Franklin Half Dollars.
I love the classics, and really wouldnt mind having a decent set, but my true love is
Beautifully toned Franklin Halves.
My biggest obstacle has been time, followed by availability.
The cost is significant, but really not impossible due the prices not being too crazy.
But, If I had more time, I'm sure I could find more coins that meet my criteria.

However, my goal is to assemble the BEST grades I can in all the coins that I CAN, in the set. Completion is not a necessity...but in a perfect world...that's the coin!
and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor

working on it since 1972 there have been few benefits to longevity. Until recently there weren't
other collectors so all the coins had to be chased down as they were issued or purchased as they
were discovered by others. Many of the varieties were probably not even made in gem much less
superb gem so one must lower his standards many times. Some of these were not discovered
until years after issue and apparently no longer exist even in unc. Even the regular issues can be
extremely elusive in very high grade. There are some unique or nearly unique coins which may
not come on the market for decades by which time they'll probably sell for large amounts of money.
2. $$$$$
3. $$$$$$$
4. $$$$$$$$$
5. Finding a coin that I can buy with numbers 1-4 above......
If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
Good sense.

<< <i>Availability of the coins. Even if I had the money necessary to buy the upgrades I need already holdered, (which I don't), they rarely come up for sale. In addition, the collection of my "dreams" includes a coin in a grade that hasn't even yet been achieved.

This is so true.
...the biggest obstacle... hmmmm
I would have to say me; searching is half the fun (people you get to meet and so on)!

I'd give you the world, just because...
Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
Yes I think the answer is the money to buy what I want.

<< <i>Well if your dream set contained a 1893-S Morgan in ms60 or better and 5000 people each had the monetary means to make that dream come true, most of those would be very disappointed cuz there just aren't enough coins to fulfill everyone's dreams. Maybe this title should be changed to reflect something a ittle more realistic. Even Bill Gates can't buy what isn't available, but I bet he could find a way to get a 33 Saint made if he really wanted one. >>
No, my title is exactly what I want it to be. This is my study, and it might suggest a few things about collectors. one might be that collectors need to be a little more realistic with their budget, or If they are true collectors, or really a collector investor, etc.. Self examination is the object here buddy

I like this response.
I wonder, with all the responses that say money is the biggest problem,
how do we have fun, and still build a worthy set?
Do we set our sights too high? You have to collect what you like.
Do we stop building sets, and purchase a killer coin once in a while.
How does one on limited funds approach all this?
I think that patience is a big factor with collectors, myself included.
I have tried to be patient for the past four or five years, and have been extrememly selective.
When the time came, I had the money, and got a really nice coin.
This has given me a lot to think about concerning the hobby and hobbyists.
