Nice card, centered has great color. only defect I see is the ink on the bottom border. Not knowing the nuances of this set I will refrain from making any quotes as to its value in 9.
    Good for you.
  • Like anything you need two people to want the card. I'm not familiar with the people who collect the 1951 Bowman set. The card could be up to 2 or 3 thousand I suspect if you have two people who really want it.

It could go like the recent '69 Shannon and get barely if any premium over the recent 8. However, you could list at $2500 and sell it immediately. Unfortunately, there is one less person who needs the card at this moment.

You could always list it on Ebay with a $5000 BIN and use ebay's new best offer feature. That is a far cheaper way to check pricing than setting a high reserve.
  • I have had some success with the best offer option. As for the value of a 9, I would say that the set isn't as popular as the 1952 one, so you might want to wait a few weeks. Listing a 9 right after an 8 isn't always a good idea. A lot of folks might might be trying to build an 8 set, but 9's are usually pricey, and that could scare some guys off in the 1st place.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

One Million Dollars! (Dr. Evil's voice)
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

With low population PSA 8 vintage cards, PSA 9s do not typically carry large premiums over what an 8 goes for. The 8 is valuable because of the low population. A 9 would not, in this case, be worth a multiple of an 8. A premium, yes. A significant multiple, no.

This holds true with many vintage baseball sets. With some of the Bowman issues, for example, a common tough PSA 8 can go for $500 - $1,000. In PSA 9, it would go for 20-30% more, and in PSA 10, it would still sell for under $2,000.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

SMR I've found is only the jumping off point...it gets to be where it's not even a guide when there are a couple of collectors extremely hot after a low pop card, especially in high grade.

Time and again I've seen these types of auctions go for 5x, 10x, 20x SMR...sometimes bidding wars just get the best of some people and they bid up a card like crazy.

    MS,
i think you may be right on this one. Most bidders were registrants building the 51 B FB set and all had 7's.

They may not have the same zeal (or funds) for the 9.

  • That auction was an aberration. dapcards has been trying to upgrade that set together for a long time...but i've never seen him go that high on an auction for a common. same w/ jeannie and she's usually a low ball bidder for '51s. i've never seen footpsacards in the mix for any '51's. As for 9's i've only seen 5 appear in the last 2 years. two landry rc's came up in high end auctions and sold for $3800 and $5600 and 3 commons showed up on ebay...they all sold between $225-400. Of the 3 graded 10's, mintstate had one last year and wanted $1400 for it. it ended up in dapcards set (don't know what he paid for it). if you're looking to make easy money, email dapcards...i'm sure he'll make you an offer that'll vastly surpass anything you'd get on the open market.
