NEW COIN DOCTOR ON EBAY.

I was cruising around on ebay looking at going prices for some things and found an 1855 Three Dollar Gold piece. I was pretty excited until I took a closer look and realized that the detail was too deep in the hair just below Liberty's headdress. So, I did a search for completed items and Lo and Behold, the person selling the coin had bought it as about an XF just a few days ago. Here's the links for the items if anyone's interested in doing a stare/compare. I'd be interested to know what everyone else thinks.
How he bought it.
How he's selling it.

I can't make them out to be the same coin...so I'll wait for other posts to point out markers that make them the same. The main markers I see on each coin, I can't seem to find on the other.image It's late. My 4 a.m. eyes may not be working too good.

Why would any sane-minded person buy a raw gold coin on fleabay?

I agree, especially on a $3. Coin appears to be the same one to me.Hair lines smooth on original coin or blured?

  • He tooled it. Bastage!! image
  • It looks like he dipped it to remove the spot on the reverse. You all know when you wash your hair and remove the oils and dirt it gives it more body.(bag)

  • It is not the same coin. The coin dew111 bought has nice even denticals on the obverse. The one he is selling has uneven denticals with an obvious protruding area at 5 o'clock. See picture with area circled. Perhaps he bought the Aboncom coin to replace a conterfeit coin (that he is now selling) in his collection(?). The $3.00 gold series is heavily conterfeited. Dew111 seems to be a heavy buyer of gold coins. Aboncom has sold four of these 1855 $3.00 gold coins recently and 3 of the 4 coins have this dentical abnormality (fakes?). Any gold experts out there who may know about this?

  • Thank you for pointing that out telecoin, but the hair detail below the headdress still looks a little exaggerated to me for an UNC $3 Princess.

Either way he is still shilling. The "high bidder" only bids on this guy's coins.

If it's gold, if it's not slabbed by pcgs/ngc/anacs, I don't even look at it. The end.....
BTW, I think the second coin is a counterfeit.

  • In the picture telecoin posted of the "dew" coin, the crown looks odd to me. Isn't the crown supposed to have jewels ALL the way along the bottom edge? There's a gap where the hair sticks out like the crown was missing some Jewels. image

The strangest thing to me is;the spit curl (for lack of better word) above the ear,it's more pronounced on the worn one
and totaly diffierent than the other.

  • I got curious about the jewels around the bottom of the crown too, so I went and looked at some examples on Heritagecoins.com. The answer is, no, the jewels aren't supposed to go all the way around the bottom, at least from what I've seen.
  • Great pic's telecoin. I don't know squat about grading but I did notice a rim dig at 4 o'clock
on the dew1111 coin that is not on the aboncom coin. I would be suspicious of a coin type
that is so often turns out to be counterfit.image

  • They are not the same coin. The one mark on the bought coin has a nick on the rim at "5 oclock" does not appear on the coin offered for sale. That nick could not be easly removed from the the bought coin. Since I don't buy or sell coins as yet I am just an impartial observer with some experience in matching items that are very small.
