Neat coin - that's not a date I've seen very often, most of the ones in the market are dated 1980-P. To your question, I'd call it AU details Net XF because of all the nicks and digs.

Yea, what happened in 1980 at the mint? Did someone have too much to drink at the mint?

Sean, why do you think this coin would get a "Net" grade? Thanks!

I circled the areas on the coin where I think the contact marks are too heavy. It's possible these are planchet defects which were present before the strike, as there is what looks like a small planchet crack or lamination on the base of the bust as well, in which case I would just grade the coin AU50.

Okay... I agree with Sean... probably net XF45... what is on his forehead?

but the real question is... HOW MUCH?

The 80-P's probably number in the high hundreds to even thousands minted, with the amount actually selling alomst every week.

There are a few 64-D's (3 sold last year via auction).

Also, I think there are at least a few people actually making date sets of off metals... anyone want to stand up and acknowledge this?

I was shown one of these Jefferson nickels struck on a 1C planchet in mint state a few years ago by my brother's mother-in-law. I can not remember the date. As I recall it was estimated a few hundred dollars. I told her the news and she was very angry as she was convinced it was worth much more.

Very nice. I just holdered one of the many 80-P's in the same grade last month. I enjoy the off-metals. Yours is redder than mine, and mine got the BN designation. Nice find.
