So....Maybe it CAN happen to me!

TommyTypeTommyType Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sleeping soundly last night, I was suddenly awakened. My sleepy eyes were somehow drawn to the sliding glass door that leads from my bedroom to the back patio. There seemed to be someone there with a flashlight. And he was obviously jiggling with the lock.

I might point out that I wasn't expecting company.....at 4AM.

Now, I'm usually slow to wake up....I'm not a morning person. But this new experience did tend to get my attention, being about 6 feet away from me.

Thinking as quickly as I could, (considering my newly conscious state), I determined that I really wasn't in the entertaining mood. The problem is I have no weapons, and my golf clubs are tucked safely away in the garage, so as not to do any harm to any more innocent bystanders.

I grasped the only weapon I had. My voice, which can be rather loud and gruff when I really want it to be.

"Get the F*** Out Of Here". (I think I woke up the chickens in the next county over).

Luckily, he got the message, and quickly disappeared.

Long story short, a day off from work ensued, and I'm the proud owner of a new security system, a motion detector floodlight in the backyard, lots of little locking things for sliding windows, and I'm finally joining the "big a$$" safe club. (Pictures forthcoming).

I usually don't have the "expensive" coins at home, but I've been buying lately and have been home most of the new year, so I have more at home than usual. But even if I was in my fully locked and loaded position, there's still stuff I don't want walking away!

Twas a wakeup call for Tommy.

That's real nice. What kind is it and how much?

    Made by "Cannon".

Cost was about $525, and $75 for delivery.

Not cheap....but I can cram a whole lot of "stuff" that I'd rather not lose.

12 guage 3" mag will really slow them down too. Hard to miss and with 8 shots I have plenty of tries.

edited to add: A 12 guage does not work well if you are not home, so the safe is a good idea image

  • Wow! I am glad that you are ok.

Seriously, I think you should look into buying a gun. A nice little Glock 9mm would do you great. They are easy to shoot and they are easy to maintain. If you are wary of having a gun in the house, take a gun safety course and make every who lives in your house take one. Then, take the gun to the range and shoot it until you get comfortable with it. I enjoy target shooting, IDPA, and trap shooting. You may come to find a new hobby! Here is a picture of our safe. It's a gun safe. Yes, my hubby is a huge gun enthusiast. image I enjoy it too. I thought this safe would be overkill, but he has already grown out of it. So, he can't say crap when I spend money on coins! image

    Anyway, consider it.

Edited to agree with the shotgun. Super easy to shoot. Cheap to shoot. You won't need to practice much with it. But it costs extra to register a short barrel with high cap but, it will perfect for home defense due to the fact that a short barrel equals a bigger shot pattern equalling more of a chance to hit your target.

It is a Glock 26. It is one of their smallest ones. It is perfect for carrying. It is also small enough to store on top of a cabinet or something to keep handy.

    No, it isn't loaded. image

Buy a gun. Learn to use it proficiently & safely. Practice often.

Nah, that is wimp stuff, gota go with the 3 1/2"mag with 00 buck 12 ga. with a super full choke. Of course I do like a lever action 30-30 for reaching out through a few walls or floors as well.

I would also recommend you go with a shotgun. Not a pistol.

A nice double barrel shotgun is very easy(quick) to load and if you use birdshot you wont have to worry about the pellets going through 3 walls and hitting your son/daughter. You also do not have to be precisely accurate. Many people can shoot a stationary target in daylight at 10yds with a pistol, but this task becomes much more difficult in a dimly lit room when you are suddenly aroused and not in control of all your faculties.

If you are concerned about stopping power then just take a shotgun and a watermelon to the gun range. You will be frightfully surprised.

300lbs is only the starting point! Load it with coin andhe'll be lookin to tote nearly 600 out of your place! image

    Happy hernia sucker!!!

  • Chances are, the douc%$bag would be too stupid to know what to do with some rare coins even if he got 'em! Probably just looking for a vcr to pawn for crack money. He (or she) may have even tried to buy Marlboros with some Morgans. Happy you're ok, though!!

I prefer a S&W 357. I hope to God that I never have to use it.
  • GTOster, congrats on getting a sensible judge. Way too many of them are letting suits like that go through and awarding damages to the scumbag, completely ignoring the fact that if the scum hadn't been doing something illegal he wouldn't have gotten hurt in the first place.

Sorry to break the news to you Dirty Harry's...but you can be loaded to the gills with guns, (I own guns too) have a 1000 pound safe, but when the NEXT guy shows up in your bedroom with one of your little kids with a gun at their head....guess what's going to happen?

We have been through this before, but a SAFE is a burglar magnet, and the bigger it is, the harder they will hit back to get into it. It's a fallacy to think that "heavy" means anything..it just means that YOU are going to open it for them...in a very horrifying scenario.

Here's the keywork. BANK. Safe-Deposit Box. Let them shoot it out with the bad guys...

  • Wow - that'a a pretty scary story. Sure am glad you woke up!

Then belive it or not He tried to sue me Judge thur it out and told him if He didn't go into the house to begin with he wouldn't have the bite marks all over along with the 35 stiches

Glad you had a good judge on this case - I have heard horror stories where it turned out the other way around.

These stories bring an important point to mind.

If you have these encounters do the following:

    1. Always shoot the perp in side the home. Shooting the perp in the rear as they leave is asking for trouble.
    2. Shots to the arms or legs are worhtless. The torso is the biggest target and the one with stopping effect. This prevents the perp from filing charges later regarding his wounds.
    2. Always press charges. If not the perp can sue and could possibly win.

  • You need one of these to your arsenal.
Guns are only good if You are home, and can get at it fast enough.
Plus you don't want to walk in on a burgler and have him shoot you with your own gun.
