Further Information Regarding Dipped or Enhanced Proofs

David,

In one of your February 8 answers you mentioned that you recently been seeing a lot of proof coins that appear to have been dipped or altered in some other fashion that show deep mirrors but on inspection have hairlines and marks that are themselves mirrored. In which series are you seeing the most examples, and what in particular should collectors look for to distinguish these from original coins?

The big offenders seem to be the nickel coins...proof Liberty nickels and proof Three Cent nickels. But we also see Seated and Barber stuff anf proof gold.

Look for hairlines, scratches, and "holes" that are mirrored over. Also, a natural proof has a "watery" look to its surface. The doctored coins look super shinning...a very bright, garish, unnatural shine, but they don't glow like a natural proof.

    Thanks,

    David
