A RED FLAG on this seller

Another buyer who won on a lot from this seller e-mailed me to warn about non-response to emails and failure to send merchandise. I had just won another lot, and mailed a check, but was luckily able to stop payment in time. The seller is:

Ok...question for those more knowledgable (esp those in the banking industry)....

Does doing a "Stop Payment" on a check really do anything?
I've done them before but have also been told that they might still be cashed.

So, does it really do anything helpful to do a stop payment or is it just an extra cost (I think I get charged $15-$20 per stop payment)?

My bank charged $15, and assures me that the check will be returned to me, uncashed; I've already emailed the recipient to advise him.

If you stop it before it clears, it should work.

The item involved is #3955084099. The other party that emailed me is a long-time coin dealer/shop. I've offered to purchase the item from cicconesr1 if he sends me the coins first. His feedback is marginal, with several negatives. I just figured I have to protect myself.
