  • Mike,

Did your set include certified grades of AU-53, before you got these coins back, or was your set all AU-55 and AU-58 grades? An AU-58 grade on the 1907-s is fantastic, that's a really tough date. The one cleaned coin, the 1913-s, at least its not one of the real tough dates to find in AU. What was the grade that the micro "O" came back at, AU-53?

The coins I mentioned were purchased raw and not holdered ( except the 93-S which I purchased from Cratylus, who cracked it out, as he hates slabs ) however, the 92-Micro O was holdered by ANACS AU 55 and I kept it in its holder. It was the one coin I sent in on Express 5 Day submission, and ended up being 12 days late. This is NOT a net graded coin. I was hoping to get at LEAST an AU 55 out of it, and praying for an AU 58.

The 13-S was a duplicate, as I already have a 13-S in PCGS AU 58.

I may be selling it...but I'll save that for a different Forun...BST Forum.

    Mike,

What I meant, are the other 60 odd coins in your half set, (not the one's you sent in for certification), were those coins collected in a minimum AU grade, like AU-55? What I was trying to find out, were you disappointed in some of the coins coming back as AU-53?

    Dan,
As your PM isn't turned on, I'll answer your question, and hopefully not upset overly sensitive fellow members.

I bought the coins raw from one of my favorite dealers, who is sometimes very generous with their grades. They were sold as AU 58's. I thought they were AU 55's, and liked them enough to buy them. I was a bit surprised that the 96-S and the 97-S came back as AU 53 ( they are the lowest grades in my half set ).

The set is a mix of AU 55 & AU 58. I have only two MS halves in the set, the 1902-O in ANACS MS 61 (looks better) and the 1904-O in NGC 61 (looks AU58 to me). These two MS coins are in for cross over to PCGS at a minimum grade of AU 58, which is what grade I want these coins in. So, you see the two AU 53's sort of stick out like a sore thumb. They are really nice AU 55's IMHO. No matter at this point, I still like the coins and someday, the set will get sent in for regrade once its complete.

If you check out Barber Halves With Varieties on the PCGS Registry you'll see the other TPG coins I have ... all of which are now at PCGS for Cross Over. These grades should become available within a day (or so), if PCGS's 15 Day Guarantee is worth anything ... image

Great news Mike! You must be thrilled. You are some coin hound because you have some seriously difficult dates listed in AU that you were able to not only find and buy raw, but find nice enough examples to be holdered.

The 98-O and the 1907-S do not show up very often at all.

That will be one fine looking set when finished.

Congrats Mike on them holdering at least most.

Don't feel so bad I also bought a coin in Bowers auction in 1991 a 1896-o Graded by David at ms62...Had it graded a couple of years later ngc 58. What would have been a 2-3k coin is now worth a few hundred today. I'll send it in again since it's been roughly 10 years and hope it goes unc again.

these coins read as if they are quite attractive. Some coins such as the micro o are bigger than the plastic they may be housed in...

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

I think I'll take some sound advice and ask for a PR on the Micro O. Its worth a shot, even if it goes to an AU 50. Its so much nicer than the other AU 50 that sold at DLRC a few months ago. Who knows what will happen. At least its one of the nicest ones in existance, and if memory serves me correctly, its ranked about #10 finest known at the moment. (Regardless of the holder its in ).

As far as posting images, I never got thru digital imaging 101, so for the time being, I could send anyone who's interested my image of the micro O and they could post it for me...anyone can PM me their email address and I'll send the image along. I'm sorry, but I don't have images on file of the raw coins, maybe the 1907-S/s that I bought from Heritage but I doubt I have the others on file.

The other Barber halves that are in other TPG holders are still at PCGS for cross over. I have no concrete date that I'll receive these new grades from PCGS.

As a matter of fact most of my Barber quarter collection is also at PCGS for cross over. The highlight of those cross overs will be my 1913-S in an ICG AU 58 holder. I graded it AU 53 to 55, but not a 58. I bought it a few years ago because its so darn rare in any AU grade. I paid a fair price then - which would be considered a bargain today. We'll see what develops. I kept five coins out of the cross over game, as they were net graded by ANACS: 1902-O AU details, scratched, net AU 50 (looks MS 62, still can't see why it was net graded ) ; 1906-O AU details, cleaned, net grade AU 50 (looks AU 58, and the cleaning is more like a slight wipe accross the reverse, with only a few minute hairlines) ; 1909-O UNC details, net AU 50 (looked AU 58 but didn't think PCGS would holder it, so I sent it to ANACS) ; 1911-D UNC details net graded AU 50 for artifical toning - thought it was too beautiful to be true, and also thought it was an AU58; and lastly 1911-S AU Details net AU 50, cleaned, I didn't notice the wispy hairlines on the reverse.
95% of my Barber quarters and dimes were purchased raw, so I may have made a couple of errors in judgement.

Other sets are also in for regarde, and one for pedigree designation, but that fodder for another thread.

Thanks again for hearing my "tales of woe".

Next step in the series of Barbers will be to have my raw set of dimes holdered. I know my 97-S was dipped, but it may grade anyway ...but the others are really choice AU and should average at least AU 55.
