You might try manual settings. The auto-adjustments on the digital camera try to equalize the colors and it usually looks like that top one. The second pic is nice, though.

I'd say you have a lot of practice ahead of you. Good luck.

  • Are you using a tripod?

Does your camera have manual adjustments for focus and exposure?

    Do you have adequate light?

You need to experiment but its not bad for a first try.

yes it has manual adjustments.....to many...just figured the WB out thanks to K6AZ

Not sure on adequate light...people talk about light boxes?...any help on what kind of bulbs to use?

actually it has quite a few settings and im going to try and set one for silver and one for copper.

Who on the board here gives pretty sound photography advice..

    thanxx all.

A few suggestions: If you don't have a copy stand or tripod your shutter speed should be about 1/160. The images are blurry because of camera shake, and the cure for that is a faster shutter. You may have to use a flash in order to get the shutter speed you need. Here is a link to a softbox that you can put together yourself. It will provide uniform, diffuse lighting. The white box works well for copper coins, but for silver I suggest you line the box with aluminum foil. Another suggestion is to set up your camera so that it is square, and level with the coin. Otherwise the perspective will be distorted, and the details will not be accurate. The easiest way to do this is with a split level.

  • Looks like the lighting is ok based on your using an 18% gray background. The pic is a little blurry though are you using a tripod or (better) a copy stand? That's my suggestion.
