Storing your slabs...

Okay my # of slabbed cards is rapidly expanding. What's the best way to store these babies. I'm thinking standing up in the PSA size shoeboxes. I believe they are an inch or so taller than the average shoebox. I was also considering bagging each slab but they seem to stack together nicely without them.

How do you guys store your registry sets?

Thanks, Bob

  • The local card shop has taller shoe boxes. Mine have 2 rows. I have 3 of them at this point for my graded stuff. I have about 100 57 topps in one with about half a row left...so they hold quite a few.

I have one of the big boxes from mj roop, and a couple binders with the ultra pro PSA pages. I also have a couple single row boxes from PSA.

My 1971 set in progress goes in the big box (going to need a second soon), and then I mix up the cards in the PSA pages from the smaller boxes, depending on which ones I want to show off.

  • 4 or 6 slabs per page seems like a lot of weight for a page. How many cards does the box from PSA hold? Thanks, Bob

I bag each slab, but I don't use the conventional card sleeves that is sold by Ultra Pro.
They are just too big for the PSA slab with a lot left over; so when you store them, all they
do is crumple up on all sides and makes them look ugly. I've made my own using team bags.
It's a generic cheap way and very form fitting, but I use 2 per slab. Put the slab in the first one,
then turn it upside down and go the other way and just seal it. <-- example
shows the line across the card from the bag, but it's form fitting.

I store them all in a 5000 count box but I remove the dividers. Holds 282 unbagged, or 225 bagged.

Anyone know of a perfect sleeve for PSA slabs? Years ago, I found a team bag that was tall enough and
perfect for PSA as the lip sealed the top perfectly. Can't find them anymore. I want something form fitting
with not a lot of extra junk leftover. Any advice/help is appreciated.
  • 12x12x12 boxes cut down. I chop off a couple of inches so that they are taller than the slab and then use the flaps from the cut off end to make dividers. They make three rows and store about 180 cards each and stack very well and are quite sturdy. If you get stuff in the priority mail boxes of this size, your cost is only for the tape to put the dividers in. Storage technique seems a function of volume. If you have a couple hundred slabs, buy the biders and the nice boxes. As hundreds become thousands, nice will go straight out the window.

  • I would suggest buying a storage box for your sets. I got one from mj roop archives. They use to advertise in SMR monthly. The cards fit very nice, and the box has whatever you wanted engraved in it. However, I did try to use the ultra graded sleeves and that didn't work out well. The sleeves do bunch up and not allow for the proper storage of graded cards in the box. So if you want to spend a little bit more get a box made for you set.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I bought several large photo boxes at Marshall's (similiar to TJ Maxx) that are leather (possibly synthetic...not sure) on the outside and felt in the inside. The larger one I have can store around 200 cards and the smaller around 150. They were around $15 to $20 and would retail in regular stores for around $50.

I'm not sure if he still posts here, but AlanAllen bought a bunch of sleeves that perfectly fit PSA graded cards awhile back and sold a bunch to board members. I bought some from him not too terribly long ago, so he may still have some left.

I bag my slabs then keep them in the cardboard boxes that I guess are made by Ultra Pro. I have three of the long shoebox-type ones for my sets and sets in-progress and a rigged-up 5,000-count box for random cards. I'm starting to run out of space and keep thinking about trying a Roop box out, but the run-of-the-mill cardshop boxes are just so much cheaper. Might have to check out Marshall's, though, for a photo box.

  • I don't bag my cards. Have em, just too much work and they get effed up sometimes because they're just a little too big.

  • I made my own boxes using 1/4 by 6 finished wood for the sides and 1/2 by 4 for the bottom by 2 foot long, fits nicely in standard cabinets. Can find the wood at any hardware store ( I got mine at Lowes). You can get it in any wood, pine ash, oak, etc. I used the ash as it is a little better wood then pine and easier to work with then oak, and stained it to match my cabinets. Make as many as one needs. I used small blocks of stained wood as dividers between years.
  • Does anyone store their cards in vintage display boxes?

For example, saving a 1970's Topps basketball display box, storing some of the wrappers inside that I've opened and storing PSA 9 stars on top of them. To me, it gives it a very authentic feel and it's more fun than storing them in a nondescript box.

Unfortunately, alot of boxes are too rare or too valuable to do this with (pre 1969 Hockey anyone? image )

  • It appears that AlanAllen is still posting to the boards (3.3 per day). I sent him a link to this thread.

I used to do it this way, but there is a better way. There are atually team bags made by Ultrapro for tallboy cards. You can use a single bag instead of two and the taller team bags fit perfectly.

    Thanks. I'll look into it.
  • Koby or anyone else:

Does anyone know of a shoe box size that fits the tallboy size slabs? I use two row and three row shoeboxes for the normal size slabs.

  • Ultra Pro Graded card sleeves. Fits PSA , etc. Stock #81307. I store mine in : Clear plastic "Sterilite" 15 qt. Clear View containers. stock #1754LAB8. $5.99 each. Holds approx. 150 slabs in sleeves, standing up. I put a cardboard divider down the middle to create 2 rows. Keeps moisture out, cards in, and easy access to look at whenever you want. I have my 61 Topps set in 5 containers. It works for me, cost is very reasonable.

I don't use many of the psa sleeves...

I have my boggs basic set in them, and then about 10 other pages with various cards I enjoy looking at. All my other graded cards are either in the archiver box (for the my 1971 set) or the small archive single row box (miscellaneous cards not in pages).

When I get to 100% basic set done of the boggs set, I am going to invest in 4 of the mj roop archiver binders to hold all of the psa sleeves.
