This PCGS Heritage coin is bothering me

1878 8TF MS67. But is it really a proof?

I've always wondered about this. Take a toned proof coin, get a high MS grade and it's worth more. Looks like a VAM-14.3, which
is a shared proof and business strike die.

  • 14.3's do come this nice in a business strike. One of the most incredible 8TFs I ever saw was a 14.3 in a PCGS65DMPL holder 6-7 years ago. Unbelievable multi-color toning. I had purchased it off of Teletrade thinking it might have been one of the ultra rarities (this is before I got a hi-res monitor). I couldn't have $3500 tied up in one coin at the time so I couldn't hang onto it. I wish I had it now. I have handled several proofs (both the 14.3 and 14.8) and the coin you are referring to does look like its a well struck business strike.

It looks like a business strike from the images and, as rare as it is as a PCGS MS67, it is rarer (and probably even more valuable) as a PR67. I'm also confident that PCGS can correctly determine its method of manufacture.
