Know what I need... a registry set sponsor.

I would like to do the registry and I even would have a top 3 set or two... but it'd cost me $1000s in grading fees which I can't afford or would be unwilling to spend even if I could. I wish there was some cheaper way image.

  • ....and when you find that "investor"....go ahead and send him my way too. I've got a RAW COLLECTION of Lincolns that I am quite proud of....1935-2004..... ready for grading as well! One thing I can say for sure though....I wouldn't like ANY one of my coins ANY BETTER if it were in a PCGS holder. In fact, I'd probably be dissappointed in over HALF the grades too!

It would be great if PCGS would offer a quantity discount to the "little guys" that have a lot of coins they want to add to a specific Registry set. I've got between 70-75 Lincolns from 1909-1958 that I'd like to have slabbed and added to my set. It's just that the cost is prohibitive; I could buy some really nice coins for what it would cost to slab all of those, so they'll remain raw for now.

I don't but was just recently thinking, I have almost all of 1909-1929 Lincolns PCGS graded, and there's probably a lot of people out there with only 1930-1958, so maybe it would be fun to share a registry set with someone.

    haletj,
I am quoting you above from this thread and then quoting you from another thread today. I am confused. You say first you don't want to spend thousands on grading fees and then you say you have almost all the early Lincolns graded by PCGS. What's the story?

Sorry. I didn't pay for the grading fees for 1909-1929, I bought them already slabbed. I would need to pay several $1000's to get my coins from 1930-2004 graded as to actually have a complete registry set. My 1959-2004 set would be a top 3 set.
  • If your coins are "that good" pay the slabbing fee... because when slabbed your coins will be worth more.
Thats the way the market is, these days.

Alan, that may be true for one that is planning to sell now. I've had most of my older Lincolns for 25-35 years, and it will be years before I dispose of them. It doesn't make sense for me to have them slabbed now, unless I want desperately to move up in the Registry rankings. PCGS seems to be stingy in giving higher grades right now, so I'd prefer to wait until they ease up a bit. Hopefully, that will be the case when I decide to sell. It's possible that my curiosity will win out before then, as I have some common dates from the teens and twenties that I think will go 66-67RD. These are coins that cost less than $10 back in the 1960's & 1970's, so it would be interesting to see how they would grade.

  • Jim, an interesting strategy. Let me raise a couple of questions:

First, what if your coppers turn before they are slabbed? I would think that the pcgs guarantee on your reds would give you some insurance?

Second, there has been a lot of discussion about PCGS grading being tight or loose. This is a troubling issue, because if it becomes well known that PCGS can be tight or loose and not consistent then the value of PCGS slabbing drops dramatically.

  • I have the same issue with my roosies. I have a complete FB silve set that I have cherried from rolls and it is all raw. Since I don't really care to have it registered I keep it raw. I think it would be close to $1000 to get it slabbed. I once called PCGS to see if they had some bulk deal for a full set and the answer was no. I think that could be a cool offering, complete set grading.
