What's your budget? What is your patience level? What eras do you like to collect? What grades do you like to collect your cards in?

These are all important questions before advice can be intelligently provided
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I'm broke, have no patience, can't make up my mind what era to collect, I am torn between doin a 206 set and 90 Donruss. Grade is not an issue.

It's going to depend on how much you want to spend, how fast you want to spend it, and what you consider success.
  • theBobs- I failed at the 1955 topps all american set in football, and the 1953 topps set.

mikeschimdt- I have aroud $200-$300 at the moment, and probobly more after i sell off my 55s. I am some what patient, and can wait. I like 10s-60s, 70s i can live with. Depending on what the card looks like, and set I could like with PSA 4 and up.

Soccerman why not try a non sport card set? most are between 44 and 88 card sets. many topics , maybe something there may interest you.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Been a baseball fan pretty much all my life, and id like to try and compete atleast one. After i complete a few sports ones, or atleast get pretty far into them, ill think about other/non sports products. 1948 leaf bx will proboably be next.

try a small set like some of the 70's Kellogg's.. or a 1961 Golden Press set, which is very nice and affordable, and small enough to complete..
    ·p_A·
  • Thanks, ill keep those in mind. I also really enjoy Hall of Famers. The older the set, the lower the grade, and the less I have to get done. For instance -> 1975 Topps I would want an average of PSA 7, 100% complete. But for a 1933 Goudey, with an average pf PSA 3, 50% etc...

I also wouldnt mind going for a key card set, or something like that. My favorite team is the Phillies/Philidelphia Athletics. I dont have that big a budget, but im sure i could get pretty far on a mainstream set if I put my mind too it, and with your guys help image.

    Thanks,

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I was considering doing a 1963 Fleer raw set, since i like the way the cards look out of the holder much more than in. It seems as though, between the Mays, Clemente, Koufax, Adock, and Checklist, It would eat up almost all if not all of my funds.

Why are you looking to complete a set just for the sake of the registry? That is ridiculous... collect the cards or players you would like to collect. The PSA registry is nice, but ultimately, it's not really a competition ... it's to showcase your cards. You don't want to get caught up in spending your limited resources on grading fees of $2-5 commons just for the registry. That's my opinion. I participate in player registries for several players, although only one I really keep active in, but I'm not overly nutty about it.
  • All the players i like (Honus Wagner, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Lefty Grove, Tris Speaker, Eddie Rommel, and Smokey Joe Wood) all have limited amount of cards, and the cards they do have are exstremely $$. Thats why i want to collect a set. I mean ill collect the set in raw, and then grade it and see how it stacks up against others. Thats all.

I would suggest a 1977 Topps Cloth Set. It isn't the players you are looking for but it is small with lots of HOFers.

If money is a facotr (and it seems to be from all you've said) I think a modern insert set is the answer. There are literally over 1000 insert sets in the last 15 years that cover the whole history of the sport. They come in all sizes, designs, price points, and checklists. There's UD Legends sets 1999-2004. A complete set of those, base sets as well as inserts, would be nice. If you want to do an older set, then you must spend some money. When you suggest "pre-war through 70s" then I think your options will be extremely limited. There's Topps Supers of the early 70s, which are underappreciated, IMHO, 1977 Topps Cloths which are competitive in the 9-10 grade but real cheap in 8 or less. There's the Fleer sets of 1959-1962, Nu-Scoops, 1960 Donruss, 1965 Topps Embossed (a set I think will be catching on sooner or later, real tough in high grade, not many graded yet), quite a few options but again, price will be a factor with any cards of Mantle, Musial, Koufax, Williams, etc. Of course, you could develop some patience and save up money to continue the project in the future.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Thanks for the suggestions helionaut, Ill look into them.

Are topps cloth, actually made out of a different material or what?

Also are the 1961 Fleer, and 1950 Callahan any good? They seem like classic sets. LMK!

    Soccerman -
I have three sets for you depending on your budget that are raw and in very nice condition. You can start from here and build the set in PSA 9's if you want.

    1. 1968 Topps Game $100 nrmt/nrmt-mt
    2. 1977 Topps Cloth $300 - All the major stars were sent in and received PSA 8's, one common that was perfect got a PSA 9.
    3. 1965 Topps Embossed $100- all exmt/nrmt missing the Mays.

  • Check this site out:

    link

If youre looking for pre war sets, the above link lists them all with average prices. A lot of those sets are tough to find and very expensive, but some, amazingly enough, are very affordable and are manageable.

Topps 64 stand up is a reasonable set to attain in lower grade (though, it gets pretty competitive when youre looking for higher grades). It's an attractive set, especially if you like color.

The 60 and 61 fleer sets contain HOFs and are relatively cheap. unfortuantely, they are UGLY (in my opinion).

Red hearts are actually a good, small set to collect...but, i believe it has a mantle, aaron and mays...and those get pretty expensive.

I think the 1950 Callahan is a pretty neat set. However, cards in PSA 9 from this set on ebay will eat up your budget before you could get through 10% of the set. PSA 7 commons from this set can be had pretty cheap, but the super-stars (Foxx, DiMaggio, Gehrig, Lajoie, Ruth, Mathewson, Anson, Cobb) could still set you back $100-$200 each. I think I saw a complete set of 1950 Callahan (still in the original box from the HOF) on ebay a few months ago, but I can't remember how much it went for (although maybe it was just an empty set box).

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the 1950 Callahan set listed on the registry is really what should be called its "master set" as the original set only had 82 cards, and the set on the registry has 92 (including errors and such).
  • Ok thanks alot guys i will be deciding soon. And again if anyone is willing to sell/trade me a starter set I will make it worth there while image

    HAHAHAHAHA!
How about a 1951 Topps Connie Mack set? That would be a small set (11 cards) that should take you 6 years to complete in a PSA 3 grade. I think you need to pass on this one, unless you have $4000 to buy 9/11 cards from Colt McClelland. It is missing the Ruth and Cleveland.
