Cleaning question from noob.

Let's say you find a coin(s) that has been buried for years. It has rust/oxidation etc. What can you do to clean it up and not destroy the value of the coin?

Thanks

If it has "rust/oxidation" the value is already ruined. Scrub away.

Depends on the coin. Some of the guys on the MD forum tumble the coins in a rock polisher, you might want to sneak over there and ask, they are good at this stuff. Old copper can be boiled in salt water, then soaked in olive oil. There are some sites with tons of good information on them, the World Coin forum has some links for cleaning ancients that would probably help you out. Go over there and do a search for cleaning coins. Not all cleaning destroys coins or makes them worthless, you just have to be careful and do it right, like everything else, there is a good and bad way to do itimage

Leave it alone. Never clean a coin. It's 500-1 that you'll be able to improve it.
