After months and months of searching for this out of print book, and thanks to Jack, I finally found and bought a Hot 50 book! Thank you Jack!
So, I got home from work and pulled out my unattributed Morgans. Here is what I found:
1) 1878-P 7TF VAM 79 Hot 50 in MS62PL.
2) 1884-O VAM 35 Hot 50 in MS63.
3) 1884-O VAM 10 Hot 50 in MS63/64.
Anyone know the current pricing for the VAM 79? The Hot 50 book was published in 2000 and I do not know what the prices are doing.
Thanks, Richard.

I did find two Top 100 with the 1921 Infrequent Reeding Morgan. I found a couple of Peace dollars with some olive leave doubling which I thought was cool and only a couple of Morgans with any date doubling.
<< <i>Hey, Richard... am I correct in assuming it's pretty much a waste of time VAM'ing common, well-circulated dollars (esp. if they have no significant VAM's) because they have essentially no premium? I can't tell you how many hours (but, maybe my wife can isgust I spent VAM'ing nearly 11 rolls of Morgan and Peace dollars. All of them are common and most were circ's. I found about 40 VAM's which were mostly I2/R3 type and mainly on circulated coins. A waste?

Is it a waste? My opinion is no. Of course, it depends on what your quest is. Circ or not, there are some VAMs that still carry heavy premiums even in low circ grades. When I first started, I sent 20 Morgans to ANACS that I attributed myself. I sent them to see if I was close or way off on some. I was only off by one coin. All of what I sent in were common VAMs, but it was the fun of searching and attributing that I enjoyed! For that quest, I used the big VAM book.
After I did that, I invested a few dollars and purchased the Top 100 book. That is when I got really hooked! You may have seen my previous posts where I listed VAM finds of the day. 11 or 12 in one day! I was amazed. So much amazed that I kept searching and finding more.
I then branched out by purchasing the 1921-D Fun with 21 book. Did not find many at first, but the key is to keep searching. I am still a LONG way away from finding the majority of those, but the fun is in the hunt.
Then I branched out further and bought the Top 50 Peace dollar book. Again, the hook went deeper. Along the way, I have searched UNCs and circs. I have found several Top 50s and many of the newly discovered pieces of both Morgans and Peaces.
I am not ashamed to admit that some of, if not most, of my finds are circulated and a few are even problem coins like lightly cleaned or maybe a scratch on it. Obviously, those are not coins I would send to ANACS unless they were super rare, but they are the more common premium VAMS.
You may have also seen my recent post of my finding of two Thornhead 1921-S Morgans from the shop. Both are circulated and for the price of $10.00 each, I will buy all I could get my hands on. Both are such neat varieties, how can one not love them?!
Cherrypicking is fun, especially when you have coin dealers that know what you are looking for and don't mind if you do it. I have spent hours, and I don't mean one or two here or there, I mean I have spent full days, i.e. open to close from 10:00 to 6:00, lookming through Morgan and Peace dollars. The best part is I can take all my references with me to use. I do take the Top 50, Top 100 and Hot 50 books with me every time. Of course, there are some varieties that you just don't need a reference for. The Thornheads (VAM 1Bx series) is one of those, for example. Once you know where to look, you will never forget.
Probably, some of the easiest coins to attribute are the 1921-P with the pitted reverse. I have a good portion of the different varieties, but still need a couple for completion.
Keep VAMing the circs. You may surprise yourself and kind the King of VAMs. And, if you enjoy it, then why stop? Just because there is no premium attached? VAM because you enjoy it. If you happen to make profits along the way, it just makes it that much more enjoyable and allows you to buy more Morgans and Peaces for your buck.
If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!!
