Suriname coin set-Mint or Proof?

I just got this set of Suriname coins from 1962. Krause only shows a proof set issued that year (650 total) and no mint sets. However, these coins certainly don't seem to have the fields you would expect of a proof set. Is anyone familiar with these issues?

Not to thread hijack, but I thought this was going to be a spoof thread of ajaan asking about the Cook Islands set. Does this mean I hang out in the Open Forum too much image

  • I know nothing about the set, but was wondering...any possibility of getting a better picture of the coins? Can't really tell much about them from the pics.

I believe these are mint sets. I don't recall having seen a proof set so can't be certain.

  • Since I am not an expert the fact that I don't have a clue doesn't really matter does it image

I can't tell from the pics anyway (that and I've lost my glasses again doesn't help).

Looks like a mint set to me, but I dunno.

Did you look and see if it had words in big lettering at the top that said "Proof Set" or "Mint Set"? image

    There's a square coin. Cool.
  • Dan, just because Krause doesn't list a mint set -- or a proof set -- for a given year, that doesn't mean there wasn't one. They're pretty slow to update the set lists. I'm unfamiliar with Suriname coinage, but does the packaging seem like it might be "official" or "post-mint"?

Don, I understand that Krause can be a bit slow, but we're talking forty-three years, which is a bit slow even for Krause image It looks like a mint product, but I have never seen one of their mint products, so it's hard to tell. The coins definitely don't have the mirror finishes we expect in our proof coins, but not all proofs are created equal image

In any event, I'm putting it on the Bay of E tonight at ninety-nine cents with No Reserve, so either someone that knows Suriname coinage will jump on it, or maybe two or three (image) and we'll see where the whole thing winds up. This is what makes this exciting image
