Baseball Card Super Bowl Commercial

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone comment on the Super Bowl commercial from Taco Bell. If you didn't see it, two guys have about 25 cards laid out on a gree felt backing (or something like that) and have an overhead lamp shining on them. They are clearly looking at some valuable cards when their buddy puts a bag of Taco Bell right on top of them. The guy proceeds to tell them how cheesy and gooey the food is, but that it's ok because it's all inside a tortilla, or something. So, the cards are ok.

Until a guy dumps a huge soda all over the whole table.

Even my non collector friends got a kick out of the commercial.

That same commercial has been running for many weeks so it wasn't anything new for the Super Bowl.

Oh. I guess that shows how much TV I watch. Either way, I liked it. I didn't notice a loupe on the table, but I bet it was there!

I think they were all commons. Nothing jumped out.
    I recall seeing a 86 Topps card.
  • Ya, I had actually seen it a couple times before the Super Bowl.

I cringed when the soda was spilled. But I guess it's that guy's fault. Who lays out their entire rookie card collection on a table without even putting them in sleeves!

  • I froze the commercial on TiVO and although some of the card designs are identifiable, the cards themselves do not represent actual cards from the sets.

The guy in the commercial said they were "all rookie cards" right before the other guy walked in with the taco bell bag. From the quick glance they provided at an angle, it did look like a bunch of late 1980's and '90's cards.
It was his fault for not having them in penny sleeves and top loaders. He got what he deserved.
Plus, when the drink spilled on them, they all just stood there and did not immediately scramble to grab the cards up off the table. I guess they did not research how real collectors would have acted if that was a real situation (including the screamed profanities).
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

That commercial brought back some bad memories for me. I keep all my graded cards in a shoebox. I set them down on the floor one time so I move some stuff around. My four year old daughter dumped a glass of water into the box. Needless to say, my heart was in my mouth.

Luckily, I try to keep all the slabs in plastic sleeves so that they don't scratch. This protected most of them. Only a few cards got exposed to water seepage and they were lesser cards in screw down holders. Once dried, they looked OK. I suppose I got lucky and it could have been worse. It could have been chocolate milk.

lol- they should let us board member direct that commercial. It would be much more of a pitch for PSA & Cards rather than Taco Bell lol.
