Blatant shill bidding in the tens of thousand of $ by established sleazy seller

Check this out recent bids

Then check out buyer’s feedback page. Feedback score 19 positive feedback received 172 all from sellers 19 to be exact 0 buyers.

Look who all the feed back is from. $11,493.95 in past auctions from same seller from feedback received.

Buyer comes into auctions 2 - 3.5 hours before auction closes and bids it up from $500 to $1,000 and multiples. Always just one bid that’s it.

Look at the bids of auctions in the feedback page and recent bid page. If he did not bid some of seller’s auctions would close 60% less then they did.

They pay eBay fees but in the long run make more by driving prices through the roof as to what they would have been without the shill bid. So just a tiny % of $11,493.95 in eBay fees but up $50,000 or more in the pocket.

I looked at some of the past threads on shilling in the forum and non are as obvious or damaging.

  • Good post. Sometimes I wish I was retired from private practice and could actively pursue frauds such as this on behalf of ordinary collectors.

Is it possible that this is the same (person/bidder) ?

If so, they are located in Missouri, and the seller is in Tampa Florida.

  • MANOFCOINS check back, I will try to answer your question.

    For now stew on this.

You bid on two auctions, were they for the same seller?

Buyer in question bid on 14 auctions today all and only for the same seller. All at around 2 hours before the auctions ended. He bid $17,354 today alone. Out of that he won auctions totaling $2,379. Of those 14 auctions that he bid on, they closed for $19,170.

12 of the 14 auctions were for coins in NNC holders. First of all how many times are going to touch the flame before realize it is burning you. He has been buying over-graded NTC, PCI, SEGS, and ACG slabs since March 2001 all from the same seller.

But he did not bid on all of the seller’s auctions. This seller is huge. He just drove up prices big time. Check out what today’s auctions would have closed at if he did not bid.

I will spell all of this out for you. The info is there for you too.

Why don’t you look up for me when the seller supposedly got burned by ACG in the allegation from the fun trial?

I AM NOT 100% BUT I WOULD NOT PUT THIS PAST THEM.

I hope you are playing devils advocate. More to come

And compare yourself to this buyer, your telling me you see similarities, COME ON GIVE ME BREAK.
  • And that's only the half of it. Go back in time by clicking on that shill bidder's feedback -- you'll see scores of auctions the seller purportedly "won." I've seen all I need to see. Yeah, $20,000 in "NNC" coins is de facto fraud.

  • Question for you all. How can you tell if you have been shilled. It seems to me that I have recently lost some e-bay auctions in the very last minutes by a very small amount. I must say that I do bid my max and then let it go. It is just fustrating sometimes when I feel that I am bidding some what higher amount then what the item is worth.
    thanks

You might have been sniped... but without knowing what the auctions were, it's hard to tell... do a search for snipe... if you are, that should tell you you're not the only one.

Sorry, not trying to hijack this thread...

  • I am not convinced based on what you posted that there is any shill bidding. He or she has several people that buy from exclusively. If you can show us where the items are resold in a short period of time I might agree. Most shillers slowly bid the people up and generally start before this person does. Tonite I made several bids on Ebay using a one time max bid. I lost on both auctions.I dont know the seller and like me he is from Detroit does that make my bids look like shilling? I agree there is alot of shilling on Ebay but this case proves nothing.

I don't think you even looked at the info. This is a huge accusation that I would never make if it did not seem logical. I did my homework and now I will school you.

    First do step 1 & 2

STEP 1) look at all of the buyers feedback and check out the buyers recent bid page thoroughly.

STEP 2) Search for the sellers name in the forum and read the past threads about them to get some of their background info.

Now that you have an idea of whom they are read on.

When I read Callandrello’s accusation I thought seller was a victim and decided to give him a try. This is when I noticed the shill.
Also Callandrello stated that seller was grading 500 – 600 coins every week, and this is just one TPG. So do you get a feeling of how big they are?

He or she has several people that buy from exclusively

I answered this question in the post above. If I am wrong than the buyer is getting taken for ride. I doubt the buyer is not aware of the problems with the merchandise he acquired over the last four years.

If you can show us where the items are resold in a short period of time I might agree.

If you did step 2, you should have an idea of the numerous venues other than eBay that the seller can use to get rid of the coins. i.e. coin shows, different website (independencecoins.com), telemarketing, etc. The seller/sellers have a big coin operation spanning across a few states.

Unlike small eBay sellers they are not confined, they can resell the coins in other places. I bet you the coins are cracked out, re-graded by another TPG, and resold elsewhere. No one being the wiser. So I can’t show you where they are being resold on eBay, because most likely they are not.

Most shillers slowly bid the people up

Whats the difference. The same outcome is achieved. Higher bids with a small percentage of shill wins.

In my previous post I showed you the difference between you and the buyer in question.

Finally, I am not an investigator, this is opinion. There could be a bigger conspiracy that I am not picking up on.
  • I can find NO evidence of shill bidding here. It looks like "designs-by-bj" knows what he wants and places 1 bid on an item, win or lose.
In fact in some cases, he's the only bidder on an high end coin. (Why shill a coin when the starting price is over $800?)
When you buy $1,000 coins, you find someone you can trust and buy from them.

Buyer in question bid on 14 auctions today all and only for the same seller. All at around 2 hours before the auctions ended. He bid $17,354 today alone. Out of that he won auctions totaling $2,379. Of those 14 auctions that he bid on, they closed for $19,170.

He places all his bids (not just on centsles auctions) about 2 hours before the auctions end. He won 4 out of 14 auctions. That's pretty good if you ask me. Do you win every auction you bid on.

Most of the coins he's bought or bid on, were in NCC or NTC holders. So what! Some people like ANACS, PCI, ACG some people even like NGC or PCGS slabs.
Is he getting burned? Maybe to you and me, but not to "designs-by-bj".

  • ????????????

I've bid on multiple items from the same seller before.........When i place a bid i always look at the sellers other items.........so what???? The option to combine items for a shipping discount is a plus. I go back to sellers i've had good experiences with. Does that make me a shill bidder ????

designs-by-bj has bids on quite a few different sellers items.

Come on! You're making something out of nothing.

  • Mikebombs- Don't worry, some people have a reason to ignor the truth in my opinion. Just buy your coins from a dealer you like at shows--in PCGS, NGC, etc. holders, and don't try to change the Sleasebay world (it's hopeless IMHO).
