1960 Proof Dime DDO Variety - Value?

Recently I sent in a 1960 Proof Roosie that I was sure was DDO. There's wicked strong doubling on In God We Trust and Liberty and the Date. I was certain it would come back graded as such. Unfortunately, when it came through, it was not designated DDO, it was a plain old 1960 PR66. It would have been a POP 16/3, which is pretty good for a rare coin alone. But did I screw up the variety ID?

I checked the CONECA site and was overwhelmed with all the varities. Fortunately, mine exhibits a very weak 19 from abraiding as listed in two of the examples, so that limits it down. What should I do with the coin now? Send it to ANACS for Variety Verification, sell it as is, send it back to PCGS, or what?

Does anyone have a clue as to the value? I'm not a variety collector and don't want to put anymore money into the coin if it's not going to be worth it. But, I also don't want to just toss out an important numismatic example. Any help in this scenario would be great.

Thanks!

  • No?

I get the feeling there aren't many variety aficionados on this forum.

  • If the doubling requires magnification to see, the likelyhood is that it won't take off as a variety except for a few die hard collectors

I can not tell from that pic if it is a true DDO or a MD example. Could you get a better pic showing the doubling? Can you see the doubling in that Pic?

I think doubled dies are very neat. I don't know anything about dime varieties, but being that yours is a proof (should have had higher quality control) and that it is strongly doubled, I wouldn't hesitate to send it in to ANACS to have it attributed. I know that if it were my coin and I sold it without further investigation, I would always wonder what I may have had. Hope that helps. image

  • Here's some more scans, it's as best as I can do with my scanner.

It doesn't really require too much magnification to see it, fairly obvious with a loupe.

I think it's hard to get good zooms through PCGS plastic.

Did you submit the coin as a PCGS' Mint Error submission? I can't tell from your pics if the coin is a minor DDO, but that is definitely not the strong doubled die that is listed in the CPG, and I believe the CPG variety is the only one PCGS will recognize on their insert.

If it is a minor DDO you can send it to ANACS and they will attribute it for you. If you want, send it to me first and I'll see if I can't attribute it for you, maybe I can save you the ANACS fees. PM me if interested.
