The Morris rookie was one of the first cards that was both "good" and "old" that I had as a kid. That Tim Jones dude always scared me, though. What a creepy picture.

Random question...is that the same Larry Anderson that was later traded for Jeff Bagwell?

    soft,
I'm considering jumping on the next rack case of 78s if there ever is one on ebay. I'm starting to regret not pouncing on the one that went for $2200. If I do, would you be interested in buying some racks? Probably for the going rate on ebay, but you can trust that they are case fresh and I don't plan on doing any searching.

    Highend
Centering was not a consideration when I was a kid. We liked the action shots and after flipping and tossing, corner quality wasn't much of an issue either. And yes, we used the dreaded rubber band and they were neatly and carefully carried in the ass pocket of my Levis all summer long - rain or shine...thru sandlot and stick ball.

I assume you saw the rack case at BBCExchange for 3 Grand... at least with these guys, you know it will be clean and not have star racks cherry picked.

yeah stone. that's just way too high. I think $2400-2500 is fair market value. I've bought a bunch of stuff from Steve, but he and Mark Murphy have somewhat of a monopoly on the vintage unopened market and their prices are sometimes off the charts for certain things. For example, I bought a 1981 Topps FB cello box from Steve, got 3 Montana's (2 badly centered) and I still probably won't get my money back, and that was just about the best box I could have hoped for (barring a PSA 10 Montana). Come to think of it, I'm not sure why I bought it. Impulse buy I guess.

I just bought a box of 78's from Steve, still has not arrived, those stupid e-checks take forever to clear.

CDsNuts, I don't mind overpaying from a guy like Steve because I trust his stuff as far as boxes and cases go FAR more than e-bay. I do buy 78 racks off e-bay but that is because I don't care about pulling a Murray or Molly. I want the high end commons for my registry set and have done very well with this so far.

OK soft, will do. Also, check out my auction

The stars would all grade 8 or worse most likely, but I didn't even look at the commons. You might get some 9s or 10s, and it probably won't go that high.

    Softparade,
1978 was also my first year as a kid. I bought the cards by the pound I think!
I remember even trying to put a set together...but what I remember most is buying packs to get the guy named "Eddie Murray" for my Orioles because it was one I was missing off the team checklist.( I sorted my cards by team then) I NEVER did open one after multiple tries with my allowance money and when my mother was thoughtful enough to bring me some packs home. Funny how that ended up being one of they key rookies. I think I was like 10 cards from the set.
Do you remember any experience like that from 1978?
Now here is the kicker that is so ironic...I went on a 1978 binge about 4-5 years ago. I bought a vending box and 10 rack packs...it NEVER yeilded me a Murray rookie! Though I was disappointed, it was definately something I continue to get a good laugh about.
Anyone else have a story like that?
  • I recently started building a 78 set in SGC 88 (or better). So far I've been fortunate to find raw cards of Brock, Seaver, Stargell and Reggie Jackson that have all graded 88. I'm amazed at the horrible centering that this set endures. When I do find a nicely centered 78, it often has a ding or something that will keep it from being an 88. I too have that B. Robby record breaker card and mine is centered about 90/10 L/R. The Brock rb card I have is 50/50 all around if the diamond cut doesnt bother you...me thinks someone was drunk at the cutting station for the better part of the production run.
  • Hey southerncards,
If you want some super clean raw 78's drop me a line.Everything I have would not have a problem getting a SGC88 and many would get you 92 and 96's

    Hey soft:
Just got my grading results for the 78 Topps I sent in. I'll give you first crack at the 9s- 72 Dawson, 322 Paciorek, 375 Tommy John, 613 M.Perez, 699 J.Brown, 700 Bench. Also got an Orioles team card that's coming back a 10, which I'm shocked about. I don't remember it being flawless, but you never know with those wacky PSA graders. Can't comlain though- six 9s and a 10 out of a wax box that was a compilation of at least 3 partial boxes with some possible reseals. Much better than I thought. Wish the rest of my submission was as positive. Got a 7 on a Bird/Magic/RC I thought would surely get an 8, as well as a variety of other disappointments. Let's just say I need to do a better job of looking for surface wrinkles. Email me at raiseraise2003@yahoo.com and let me know if you need any of those. Maybe we could work something out.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm sure it's killing me in the auctions, but it happened, and I'm not going to hide from it by changing my username or any of that nonsense. Here's what happened:
I had three single graded cards that I put up for auction. I was out of town on business when the auctions ended and payment was received, so I had my roommate at the time ship them for me. I didn't give him specific instructions and he sent them in plain white envelopes, with stamps. The cards got crushed, refunds were given, and I was out money. Clearly no one's fault but my own. The other was back in '02, and I'm not sure of the circumstances, but I do recall I was in the middle of some personal things at that time. Again, no denying it was my fault. And I do want to make it clear that I did everything in my power to make everything right with the person on the other end of the deal. Lesson learned, and I'm moving on. If it hurts my auctions, then so be it. It would be deserved until I get a lot more transactions under my belt. I'm not sure what the protocol is for posting auctions here (I guess I should've checked first), but the only reason I did so was because I knew soft was looking for hi-grade 78s and I thought this lot would go reasonably low. I do appreciate you bringing it up.
