Opinions on ICG

Guys what are your thoughts regarding having ICG slab your coins or PCGS or NGC? Will my coins that are graded and slabbed by ICG be worth less or harder to sell than if graded by one of the other 2 companies?
Thanks in advance!

    Yes.

In a nutshell: I think they're perfectly fine for circulated coins, but the marketplace generally doesn't trust anything above 64 or 65 in ICG plastic.

Some would also say that even if their grading is fine for circulated coins, they'd still resell for less than PCGS or NGC plastic. I suppose that's sometimes true.
  • Short answer, yes, I believe your coins will be harder to sell and bring le$$ in an ICG holder than PCGS or NGC (ANACS running third in my opinion in terms of resellability). It seems ICG has a reputation in many circles (deserved or not), primarily I think for handing out PF-70 grades in immense numbers when compared to PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. If you search through the thread topics on this forum for 'ICG' I believe you may find many threads on this very topic.
  • By the way, I would add... who cares? Unless you are buying coins purely to turn around and resell them, you should buy the coin on its own merits regardless of the holder (usually, some holders are better off being removed from the coin). Superior coins are always in demand, and cheap coins for the grade/type are usually cheap for a reason.

Personally, I've been very happy with the quality of my ICG coins (some gold and type stuff). I've showed them to various dealers and they seemed pretty pleased with how they were graded. Like everyone else says, "Buy the coin, not the holder". I've heard more than once that dealers have to discount ICG holdered-coins which I think is stupid just on the face of it, but it's what their market dictates. I guess you take advantage of this and buy them out of their undesirable ICG coins if you like them.

ICG is not my preferred holder - my experince with them is that they are
less likely to match the PCGS grade than NGC or ANACS. having said that,
one can _sometimes_ get a great deal on a coin in an ICG holder.

I would not prefer to submit to ICG for grading. I only submit to PCGS at
    this time.

it is a shame that for whatever the reason ICG coins tend to sell for a bit less in the marketplace....however in terms of a company I think ICG is top notch....they are pleasant to deal with, know coins and grading, and try some very new things in the marketplace......time will tell .....meantime as I feel most would agree...you have PCGS / NGC 1st and ANACS / ICG 2nd

I completely agree with what Scarsdale just said.

Funny thing is....I currently ONLY submit to ICG. They're quite good at what they do (let's not get started with their high-grade modern over-grading...which is a bit worrisome) and I can drop off and pick-up my coins in person. I even got to talk with JP Martin in person for a bit. They're really nice people down there!

Many stunningly toned ICG Morgans are showing up in major auctions. Someone(s) think ICG is OK, and in the current hot market, are making sort of a brave/bold statement about their faith in the market value of ICG's slabs. Prices have proven them right.

Icon-envy coupled with your forum name mean neverending comments. Better pick a very tiny icon quickly.

It depends on the grade and the type of coin. Many moderns are overgraded, and even higher-end pieces that aren't modern. That said, I got a toned morgan in an ICG MS63 holder recently that's a 63 in anyone's holder.

My opinion of ICG is that they are not as good as PCGS, NGC, or ANACS and I will rarely pay the same price for an ICG slab as for those others sight unseen.
