NB question. To slab or not to slab? modern gold. opinions please

Ok people this question is very important to me. I will give examples of pieces I am considering; most of them come in really nice wooden boxes (the really big boxes are hard to store). Also, notice that I said slab and not grade (though, 70’s would be nice, I won’t hold my breath). My main concern is preservation. NGC’s slabs have the second best preservation after ICG’s intercept shield slabs. Not sure I want my gold in ICG plastic, thoughts? Most of the stuff is bullion; can a low grade hurt the value? So let me know if I should slab them or leave them in the wooden boxes.

Here are the candidates:
1) Singapore Lion 5 piece set. Really nice presentation but multi holder would be cool too.
2) 5 piece Angel set.
3) 2 ounce bullion. The proofs come in nice boxes and have low mintages like 150. Would the tpg put the mintage on the insert? I have one in a pcgs slab and one in ngc, so I know it could be slabbed. One of the proofs has a scratch on the obverse. The 1990s come in huge boxes, 2000’s are manageable.
4) 2 ounce Cook Island 2003 mintage 199. See pic below in sig on right. Nice little wooden box.

Thanks all.

I posted the same question in the World and Ancient Coin Forum. I put it here too, incase some of you don't visit there.

I wouldn't spend the money. Instead I bought intercept boxes single and double wide and put my proof gold in these. I store the original boxes separately to save room.

  • Dimples where can i get the intercept shields?

the coins that i am talking about come in plastic capsules. can i put the capsule in to it? i dont want to remove them or hadle the actual coin.

As for other board members i am a collector for a little over a year, i brought up some questions in this thread and am asking for advice. can not anyone regurgitate some points to discuss. is there a reason why nobody is replying? am i at the right place? what’s going on? image

    Mike,

You can buy the intercept shield boxes at most local dealer stores. The standard box has 10 inserts that each hold one graded coin. I just put one gold coin capsule in each one and store the packaging materials elsewhere. This way you can easily put them together for display or sale any time you want. The boxes cost about $12 each.

You can also google the name for a dealer near you or order thru the mail.

if you have really special coins in your collection that are higher/substancial values or sentimential value or any value i would buy the coin world holders that look like slabs and are inert hard plastic and make a great safe way to store coins and make a good presentation also your gold coins would look great in these coin world black plastic slabs you can put the coins in them yourself and write wahtever you want on the lable

    welcome to the boards!!!!
