To slab or not to slab? modern gold

Ok people this question is very important to me. I will give examples of pieces I am considering; most of them come in really nice wooden boxes (the really big boxes are hard to store). Also, notice that I said slab and not grade (though, 70’s would be nice, I won’t hold my breath). My main concern is preservation. NGC’s slabs have the second best preservation after ICG’s intercept shield slabs. Not sure I want my gold in ICG plastic, thoughts? Most of the stuff is bullion; can a low grade hurt the value? So let me know if I should slab them or leave them in the wooden boxes.

Here are the candidates:
1) Singapore Lion 5 piece set. Really nice presentation but multi holder would be cool too.
2) 5 piece Angel set.
3) 2 ounce bullion. The proofs come in nice boxes and have low mintages like 150. Would the tpg put the mintage on the insert? I have one in a pcgs slab and one in ngc, so I know it could be slabbed. One of the proofs has a scratch on the obverse. The 1990s come in huge boxes, 2000’s are manageable.
4) 2 ounce Cook Island 2003 mintage 199. See pic below in sig on right. Nice little wooden box.

Thanks all.

If you want to spend $18/coin to have them slabbed do it. I myself would put them in Air-Tite holders. Gold doesn't tarnish too easily.

They look like they are already in airtight containers. Me? I'd leave them that way.

I would have them slabbed, but I am a slab slut.

I like the little rounds slabs better than the bulky rectanular ones.

    Welcome, Mikebombs!!

Frankly, since you don't care about the grade, you aren't going for the InterceptShield, and authenticity isn't an issue, why bother putting out the bucks to have them slabbed? An Air-Tite should be fine; just don't store it under humid conditions. None of the slabs are really 100% airtight, anyway.

  • Askari, thank you I have been waiting all day for an answer from some one like yourself. I even went on a tantrum. Where were you? Perfect, you read the question and answered it perfectly. Thank you.

Where was I? Well, I was at work until 6pm (by which time you'd already posted your "where is everybody" query) and I had to get dinner for the kids (since the wife had a church function), get them through homework and ready for bed ... then I get a little play time.

Actually, I assure you the natives are friendly and extremely helpful, but we don't post at a frantic Wall Street pace. image

    Yes.

When selling if the coins grade 68 or lower you will likely relize a better price if you crack them out anf sell them in the orginal mint packaging.

image Wow! You collect 2 ouncers! My collection are almost all one ouncers. Those that do not come in acrylic capsules/holders, I put in Air-Tites. I have bought some slabbed but I do not submit my coins for slabbing. My Chinese pandas that come in soft plastic remain in them but placed in 2X2 dollar acrylic snap on holders. image
