Help with Peace dollar VAM?

This is a 1923-P. Looks like a VAM 1B but the die break is in a different place. It extends through the hair into the field, almost to the flowing hair behind liberty's head. Anyone know, or is it still considered a VAM 1B?

It does not look like VAM 1B. There have been new discoveries of die breaks in the hair since the last issue of VAM. Check out the VAM Updates at www.ashmore.com.
  • Thanks!

I was unable to attribute it based on both the photos and descriptions on that site. I double and triple checked.

Should I submit it? If so, how?

    Thanks again.

Show us a large picture of both sides. Sometimes we focus in on one aspect of the coin and don't see the part that's attributed. I do it all the timeimage

  • The crack isn't wide enough to be attributed. Common crack placement for this year.
  • There is also a crack going through the neck that I noticed.

    Anyway here are the pictures.

  • From the photo of the obverse, it looks like the bottom right of the B is doubled, and there is a small die gouge through the right inside middle of the E (in LIBERTY). These are probably just reflections, right?

Yes, looks that way under a loupe.

So the consensus is not attributable?

Unfortunately yes. She's a gorgeous coin, but just like in the Morgan series, if the die isn't broke enough to give you some cool lump, it's not a VAM. Thanks for sharing your coinimage I very much enjoyed seeing it.

  • Thanks for everyone's help. I appreciate it.
  • I have a 1923 Peace Dollar nearly IDENTICAL to this! I've got the die cracks by her bun and down by the neck exactly like this coin. I don't have the doubled right bottom corner of B nor the gouge in the E though. Mine is slabbed in an old NGC holder and is graded MS 64. I can also see die polishing marks all over this one. Just thought I'd share that. I wish I had a picture of it to post!

I know nothing about VAM's, so are these gentlemen saying that this coin isn't a recognized variety? What does "attributable" mean?

    Thanks!

When you attribute a vam it means that you do your homework and try to find out which one it is. It can be very tough, and that's why we ask for each others help. Not attributable just means that the break is very common and nothing special is happening there. It's when something special happens that it gets a vam number, something like this:

If that crack hadn't developed into the break leaving that lump of material on top of the D, it wouldn't get a vam number.
