  • Very interesting results - few weeks ago had a good thread on who would/should get in from this class.
We all knew Marino and Young were a done deal - but ONLY 2 more and both Old-timers - WOW. Some
guys definitely worthy may have a long road with the quality coming the next few years.
  • Why does the NFL HOF have a rule about 4 players each year must be elected?

To me, that forces players into the HOF!!!

What happens on a bad year with marginal players?

I said it on another thread, will say it here..

It's a disgrace to the game that Art Monk is still on the outside, looking in.

Michael Irvin should have been a first ballot HoFer.

They need to revamp the voting process.

... The Board of Selectors meets annually at the time of the Super Bowl to elect new members. There is no set number for any class of enshrinees but, the Board's current ground rules do stipulate that between three and six new members will be selected each year. The 1973 and 1976 classes of three were the smallest ever named. ...

Pro Football Hall of Fame selection process ...

The Hall of Fame's charter class was elected in 1963, and the selection of old-timer/senior candidates began in 1972. Because of their late start, the Hall of Fame could select (6) per year for quite a while and still not dilute the talent pool. With the exception of John Stallworth, the NFL HOF'ers selected haven't endured the same level of controversy or scrutiny that baseball does.

    Axtell,

    I agree about Art Monk.

I also thought this class would've had (6) members elected. Besides, Marino and young, I had Monk and either Carson/Kuechenberg picked along with the (2) veterans. So, I was suprised there was only (4) selected. Many thought Thomas was the sentimental favorite.

I disagree with Michael Irvin being a 1st ballot HOF'er though. His rank all-time ...

    16th - Receptions: ( Reed 4th, Monk 5th, Fryar 6th and Ellard 11th )
    11th - Receiving yards: ( Ellard 5th, Fryar 8th and Monk 9th )
    39th - Receiving TDs: ( Reed 10th, Fryar 13th, Clayton 16th and Monk 30th )

... he'll probably get in before Ellard, Fryar and Reed, but shouldn't before Monk. The allegations of drug abuse may have hurt him with the writers? Ellard has been eligible since 2004 (not a finalist yet), and Reed and Fryar will be eligible for 2006. So with Monk. Irvin and these three - they may steal votes from one another?

First rounders IMO would be Tim Brown, Cris Carter and Marvin Harrison.

    Nick,

I had selected players that were retired. Of course there's Rice, Brown, Carter, Harrison, Owens, Bruce and J. Smith still active that have similar and/or better career numbers.

Jerry Rice will never retire! image
  • The Hall of Fame usually has between four and seven players go into the hall each year. A lot of the time, it seems as if the number of players inducted depends on marketability. If there aren't any huge names, like Marino, they will induct six or seven to draw more interest and a larger crowd. With the likes of Marino and Young, there was no need to induct any more players than four. I've never really understood the Hall of Fame. They market themselves as being the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but don't recognize any players or coaches from before 1920. They really need to change their name to the NFL Hall of Fame.

I still can't figure out why Monk hasn't been voted in. He's much more deserving that several other receivers in the Hall. I was suprised that the only modern players elected were Marino and Young - there were a couple others that seem to have been adding steam going into the vote (such as Russ Grimm....). Strange HOF class...

Art Monk was held out again and Lynn Swann is in the Hall of Fame. There is no justice.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Swann is exactly who I was referring to as being in the Hall while Monk was snubbed (again).

Warren Moon and Troy Aikman should be locks next year - QB seems to be a soft spot for the HOF. Monk should have a good chance next year. With all the eligible receivers, I think this may help him once the comparisons are done (accomplishments/stats at retirement).

What are the RCs going to be for Benny Friedman and Fritz Pollard? There is a 1955 Topps All-American for Friedman.
  • SouthsiderSouthsider Posts: 1,049 ✭✭✭
As far as I know, there are no cards of Fritz Pollard.

FYI, The new additions to the HOF RC set have been made, along with the change to USFL cards.

I definitely think that Monk should be in. The two reasons I have heard are that he didn't get any TD receptions in the super bowls and he hardly ever talked with the media.

    Jason,

I see the Benny Friedman RC listed ... '55 Topps FB AA, but not one for Fritz Pollard. Is this correct?

Thanks to the PSA staff for updating the HOF rc set for 2005 enshrinees and for changing the rookie cards of Kelly and Young to USFL.

  • This bring a question to my mind. Im new to this so be kind.
When they add a new player to the HOF how is it determined what card will be "the" rookie card? ex. like this year S.Young was elected to the HOF and his offical rookie card was Topps USFL card.
For most players i can see this is pretty easy, but what about some of the newer players where tons of alternate cards were produced from many different makers (topps, UD, etc etc)
Lets take P.Manning. Lets assume he will make it to the HOF. What card should i be looking to get.
    hope this makes sense image

  • The more popular/expensive card is usually used for the HOF set.

In Manning's case it will probably be 98 SP Authentic.

There's no Fritz Pollard card listed because he has never had a card printed, playing days or otherwise.

Manning is an easy one because 98 SP Authentic is THE top base RC of Manning and any other rookie from 1998. Where its going to be tough is when players from 2001-present get elected. There isn't a clear cut issue from 2001-2004. Remembering that no auto/jersey/game used type cards are allowed. (They are considered inserts).

Actually, didn't PSA decide that 98 SP Authentic wouldn't be used either since they are serial numbered/inserts?

All i know is, i wont buy any of those cards until i see them listed in the Registry. I dont like the modern stuff much anyway.

I don't know what will happen when we start getting the player with modern RCs elected. But, that's a long way off. Manning will probably play another 8+ years, plus another 5 until he'd be eligible. I'd imagine there'd be a poll in 2018 or so! image Who knows, maybe by then a different card will have become the must have Manning RC?
  • thanks for the replies to my question.

Yeah, its a long way off but its never too early to think about it.

  • Actualy, the Benny Friedman rookie card is not the '55 AA set. He had a card in the 1926 Sport Company of America set...........but good luck in trying to find one.

The HOF RC set does not use oddball/specialty cards like that, only regular issued cards. Making the 55 AA his RC.

If you think this year was tough on the committee, look ahead to 2006 — these candidates will be eligible for the first time: Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, Reggie White, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed. Deion Sanders would've been eligible had he stayed retired.

Now, throw in the old-timer/senior candidates, and the former finalists Carson ... 6X , Monk ... 5X , Greenwood ... 5X , Kuechenberg ... 4X , Dent ... 2X , and the Raiders' Ray Guy ... 5X , L. Hayes ... 4X , Stabler ... 3X , I don't see how Irvin makes it in next year. Aikman is a 1st ballot lock, and selecting Irvin would allow for ( 2 ) Cowboys within the same year. There's been talk of Cowboy bias every since last year with the voters. This could affect Bob Hayes as an old-timer/senior candidate next year?
