The four-man class was elected by the Hall of Fame’s 39-member Selection Committee who met this morning in Jacksonville, Florida. The newest members of the Hall were selected from a list of 15 finalists that had been determined earlier by the committee.

We all knew Marino and Young were a done deal - but ONLY 2 more and both Old-timers - WOW. Some
guys definitely worthy may have a long road with the quality coming the next few years.
To me, that forces players into the HOF!!!
What happens on a bad year with marginal players?
Things that make you go hummmmmmm
It's a disgrace to the game that Art Monk is still on the outside, looking in.
Michael Irvin should have been a first ballot HoFer.
They need to revamp the voting process.
<< <i>... Why does the NFL HOF have a rule about 4 players each year must be elected?

... The Board of Selectors meets annually at the time of the Super Bowl to elect new members. There is no set number for any class of enshrinees but, the Board's current ground rules do stipulate that between three and six new members will be selected each year. The 1973 and 1976 classes of three were the smallest ever named. ...
Pro Football Hall of Fame selection process ...
The Hall of Fame's charter class was elected in 1963, and the selection of old-timer/senior candidates began in 1972. Because of their late start, the Hall of Fame could select (6) per year for quite a while and still not dilute the talent pool. With the exception of John Stallworth, the NFL HOF'ers selected haven't endured the same level of controversy or scrutiny that baseball does.
I agree about Art Monk.
I also thought this class would've had (6) members elected. Besides, Marino and young, I had Monk and either Carson/Kuechenberg picked along with the (2) veterans. So, I was suprised there was only (4) selected. Many thought Thomas was the sentimental favorite.
I disagree with Michael Irvin being a 1st ballot HOF'er though. His rank all-time ...
16th - Receptions: ( Reed 4th, Monk 5th, Fryar 6th and Ellard 11th )
11th - Receiving yards: ( Ellard 5th, Fryar 8th and Monk 9th )
39th - Receiving TDs: ( Reed 10th, Fryar 13th, Clayton 16th and Monk 30th )
... he'll probably get in before Ellard, Fryar and Reed, but shouldn't before Monk. The allegations of drug abuse may have hurt him with the writers? Ellard has been eligible since 2004 (not a finalist yet), and Reed and Fryar will be eligible for 2006. So with Monk. Irvin and these three - they may steal votes from one another?
First rounders IMO would be Tim Brown, Cris Carter and Marvin Harrison.

I had selected players that were retired. Of course there's Rice, Brown, Carter, Harrison, Owens, Bruce and J. Smith still active that have similar and/or better career numbers.
Jerry Rice will never retire!

<< <i>I still can't figure out why Monk hasn't been voted in. He's much more deserving that several other receivers in the Hall. >>
I definitely think that Monk should be in. The two reasons I have heard are that he didn't get any TD receptions in the super bowls and he hardly ever talked with the media.

I see the Benny Friedman RC listed ... '55 Topps FB AA, but not one for Fritz Pollard. Is this correct?

When they add a new player to the HOF how is it determined what card will be "the" rookie card? ex. like this year S.Young was elected to the HOF and his offical rookie card was Topps USFL card.
For most players i can see this is pretty easy, but what about some of the newer players where tons of alternate cards were produced from many different makers (topps, UD, etc etc)
Lets take P.Manning. Lets assume he will make it to the HOF. What card should i be looking to get.
hope this makes sense

In Manning's case it will probably be 98 SP Authentic.
Joe
Actually, didn't PSA decide that 98 SP Authentic wouldn't be used either since they are serial numbered/inserts?
All i know is, i wont buy any of those cards until i see them listed in the Registry. I dont like the modern stuff much anyway.

Yeah, its a long way off but its never too early to think about it.

Now, throw in the old-timer/senior candidates, and the former finalists Carson ... 6X , Monk ... 5X , Greenwood ... 5X , Kuechenberg ... 4X , Dent ... 2X , and the Raiders' Ray Guy ... 5X , L. Hayes ... 4X , Stabler ... 3X , I don't see how Irvin makes it in next year. Aikman is a 1st ballot lock, and selecting Irvin would allow for ( 2 ) Cowboys within the same year. There's been talk of Cowboy bias every since last year with the voters. This could affect Bob Hayes as an old-timer/senior candidate next year?
