Hi Kevin Wow! Very sweet! Beautiful set! A set of them came up at Coach's Corner but I got outbid. That is a proud collection and the envy of the Heritage Club at PSA!!!
I have the Joe G and the Monte from the regular set, wish I had more!
I love seeing the originals, such colors. I really wished that Mathews and Doby had signed. I love that Doby picture...he looks like he is 15 years old! My 54 Yogi auto should be on its way from topps very soon. I love the look of that card too. I really need to check out some 56 picture.
<< <i>I really need to check out some 56 picture. >>
Kevin I was just thinking of preparing myself and getting reacquainted with the 56T set - it's fun to try and psyche out Topps and guess what they may have in store for us? E.g. it would be cool if they threw in some Hocus Focus or 56T pins! The pins would have been a great item to throw in the Hobby boxes! I'm a big pin fan. Another thing that would have made a great hobby only item would have been to insert winner cards for the original pen and ink drawings for the cartoons on the back! I'm a really big fan of the cartoon art!!! And of course, as you said before, what are they going to do with the grey/white variations?
can you believe that topps inserted 25 real 52 Mays autographs into boxes or 2001 heritage? I have only seen one up for auction. No one has the balls to do that now a days...oh yeah and they inserted each card from the 52 set into packs too...dang
For anyone that is not familiar, Topps sold all of the older art work and are still working off newer stuff that is in their files.
Here is a 67T Horace card with the corresponding art pieces:
The stuff from the Heritage will eventually surface at the Topps vault but the bidding will be feverish and I will probably have to pay a premium just to get one piece! And when some of the great stars come up - anything could happen!
your friend Mike
PS: Kevin if the 01 auto set ever comes up again - it WON'T get by me again! That set is incredible! I'm am now effectively in Heritage Envy!!!
The last one I saw was being sold on ebay by some congressman. I emailed him to see what he needed but no dice. Of course the set I own are the retired guys, the active sets is kinda weak...Arod, Bonds, Nomar, Glavine, Helton,Chipper...LOL
If I remember right he tried selling it around this time last year...keep your eyes peeled!
Kevin - I have to agree with Mike, and who wouldn't when looking at those Autos. That is incredible set. How many of those were you lucky enough to pull from packs?
The first one I pulled was Spahn. I was quickly reeled in. McDougald was next...my dad told me he was ROY that season. There were others that I pulled but many of them bought. The Mays was actually bought from a guy on here back in 2001. Craig was his name...great guy, I think he still has a box of 01.
The 2001 packs were plauged though. Topps put the autographs last in the packs and you know what that means. Retail was the ultimate chance back then. I remember going into a target and seeing 6 roughed up packs...I didn't care about getting ink, I knew the feelers had been through them. Sure enough in the last pack I pulled the Arod auto. Whats even more amazing is that the next year I pull once again the arod at the same target.
Duke Snider was the last card I needed, I overpaid for it but when you are that close you want to make sure you nail the set. I remember buying a red ink McDougald numbered 51/52. The dealer had no clue that the red inks were selling for over full book, he also didn't realize that 51 was McDougalds rookie year. I sold what was a 100 card for 212.00. With deals like those I was able to buy most of the set.
I have a bunch of extras that I keep. A few Spahns, and a few Roberts. For some reason Preacher Roe was one of the hottest ones. I remember last year I was feeling kinda down on my birthday and I headed over to the al night wal mart and was happy to find that heritage had finally reached retail...My first 8 packs yielded that Newcombe auto...man I was happy.
JS- that's avery impressive run of 01 autos, initially i was drawn to the heritage because i thought it would be cool to pull an original 52 mays auto.
last year from two cases i pulled a joe borowski and thorton kipper autos, as well as team topps vida blue (i think) and boog powell. maybe this year will be my year to pull a mays.
overall, i haven't had too much luck pulling HOF autos but my luck has to change one day.
in 01 i pulled mays and ford korean war relics iwas excited about that.
please excuse my ignorance but what is up with "pack feelers" ? These guys run around groping packs
Yep that is what they do, you can sometimes tell what packs have the jersey cards or bat cards by feeling for the small lump that is on most of the cards. These people get all the jersey cards and leave the crap in the stores. This does not always work with autograph cards.
Kevin I believe that Topps should reward the hobby only buyers with a great box topper insert - e.g. original cards with autos - they could get the original 56T pins and Hocus Focus stuff too!
Right now, autos drive the modern industry - I really think the gu stuff has gotten old - I am due to pull a great auto!
On the Congressman and his set - if someone put a BIN on the set - what do you think it would be?
It will still be interesting to see what is in the set - besides the white/gray backs e.g. Now another thing - Mickey Mantle is still controlled by UD? What a shame in terms of opportunity - the Mick did the triple crown thing and MVP that year I believe. Somewhere in a hobby box should be a PSA 8 quality Mick card!
<< <i>i'm jealous.. i wish i would have gotten into the Heritage craze prior to 2004.. >>
Hi Perry I never pulled anything good and I bought loads! I always get the nobody autos. I swear, just call me the Charlie Brown of Heritage. I'm hoping this will be my breakout year!
I must admit, those 52s are very sweet. You guys are getting me all wound up on this heritage stuff. I may be scoping my target on the release date and giving modern another chance. You guys are pumping the crap out of it!!
I will scan my pulls from 05 Heritage. I sold all my autos from last year to fund the purchase of more booster boxes. I'll edit this post when I get home and add the Feller auto and the few gu I managed to pull.
Kevin, those 52 autos are gorgeous. I can't imagine a better looking set. I wish I had started collecting heritage before 04 as well. I never liked the Topps Archives stuff and I thought Heritage would be the same way, so I avoided it...oops.
yes I own the entire retired part of that autograph set. In 2001 topps made 52 different autographs...26 of the guys played in 1952 and the other 26 played in 2001. In addition to the amzing retired guys, you had Bonds, Nomar, Arod, Glavine, Helton and others in the active auto list. In my opinion, a checklist like that will never be attempted again, if you think think about how much money topps spent on all that it amazing that they still could keep packs at 2.99!
Whats more amazing is that every card had the same print run! Meaning your odds of pulling Willie Mays was the same as pulling Joe Mays. Today the best cards are short printed and in groups with certain pull odds.
2 players did not sign in 2001. Eddie Mathews passed away right after heritage was released, and Larry Doby did not sign any cards even though beckett continues to list him in the set. Topps offered a non-numbered red ink Willie Mays auto in exchange for not only the Mathews auto redemptions but for the Mathews bat redemption too! Thats like having an 80 dollar GU bat redemption and getting back an autograph that booked 500 at the time! Needless to say they don't do that anymore.
I also have stashed away some extras of the autogaphs...3 Spahn's, 3 Roberts and about 10 others. each player signed only 200 blue ink and 52 red ink, even though many more Mays red inks got out...who knows how many were falsely numbered.
Well, nothing spectacular. I busted 2 more boxes tonight, didn't add a single card to my list that I needed for my master set. Did add the Sweeney black refractor, Killebrew bat and Bernie Williams bat though. Same pulls as I've posted before..1 chrome refractor/box, 4 chromes, handful of inserts, about 11-12 sp/var/box etc...
Here's scans of the GU and the auto I pulled. Tough to see on the Feller auto, but in the top left corner it's hand #18/25.
I'll be hanging on to the black ones for a while. In fact, I was thinking about picking some up, some are selling very cheap for as difficult as they seem to be to pull...
Hey AJW, do you have the Will Clark Mother's Cookies and other food cards of him? Let me know what you are looking for. You can email me a list of what you need or maybae what you have. I am sure that there is stuff out there that you aren't aware of. How about a "Baseball Cards" magazine card? I might be able to help...John
CURRENT PROJECTS IN WORK: To be honest, no direction, but... 1966-69 Topps EX+ 1975 minis NrMt Kelloggs PSA 9 All Topps Heritage-Master Sets
I have not finished ripping and am saving some for the live rip...if people refrain and have anything left? - I have recieved the normal array of GU seat splinters and GU cork and of course: as my Heritage luck continues...no autos. Would like to have gotten a black Bonds but did pull a refractor which is a pretty nice pull IMO:
I know Kevin pulled one also...and considering there are only 556 in the entire universe - that's not too bad I guess.
