Just had to share- My 80/81 Bird/Magic/Dr.J......

About a month ago, I was in the market for a box of 80/81 Topps basketball, looking for a bird/magic/dr.j in mint for my collection. I came across an auction that seemed like it was on the straight and narrow. It was a wax box, plus an actual bird/magic/dr.j. The guy said he bought the card back in the early 90s when he bought the box so he wouldn't be tempted to open it. The pics were small, and naturally I assumed the card was in about NM or worse because most of them are, but the auction ended at $1050 which was the price a box goes for anyway. I figure I can sell the card to cover some of the expense, then crack the box hoping to pull a mint one. So I get the package and was blown away at how beautiful this card was. I cracked the box anyway, getting two more, but neither even close to this one. I think it's about a half-centimeter from being a $3500 card. Enjoy.

(ps- I know it seems like I'm bragging, and I guess I am. But I just figured out how to scan my cards and this forum is great. Let me know if I should tone it down a smidge.)

Nice card, Nutmeister... one of my Basketball favorites. About 10 years back I traded a 67 Carew Rookie (had 3) for same - mint for mint. Glad I did. Regards.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • I'm glad you started this thread! I have three of these cards but as a kid I seperated them into the individual cards (Erving,Johnson,Malone) are they worth anything like this? Is anyone interested in buying them. They are probably 6 or 7 type shape.

I pulled one these years ago from a .25 pack. It was perfect without the usual print dots. Sold it for about $100 back in '93 when I got out of the Marines and needed the money. Regretted it ever since. It would have graded an PSA 9 today.

My brother had an uncut sheet that had two of these cards on it. What made the sheet unique was that the sheet did not have the perforations for the cards to be seperated. It was consigned to Mastronet (I think) and only got about $600.00. Wish he still had it. Still, not a bad profit since he picked it up at a flea market in the early 1980"s for $1.00........yes one dollar. By the way, yes you have a very nice card there. I assume you are getting it graded.

Actually, the cards I keep for myself I do not get graded. I really don't see the need to and I'm not all that crazy about the way they look in the slab.

I was stupid at 11 and did the same thing!(doh).Sorry to say but they are pretty much worthless if you ripped them apart.
  • Yeah, that is what I figured... image
