2004 WESTWARD JOURNEY NICKEL SERIES COIN AND MEDAL SET

Anyone buy this set? What do you think of the medal!!!! Will this set be worth anything?...I was disappointed in the medal myself...

  • I bought two of them. As far as their appearance, they don't seem to me to be anything great or special. I just bought them because of the low mintage, figuring that I can sell them at some point and make a few bucks.

The metal has no appeal, I agree.

It was a marketing thing for the Mint to take three coins obtainable in other venues and put them together in this way. I think they got high sales initially because people were hoping for some special finish or aspect to the Sac or the nickels, but that apparently didn't happen.

If the sets remain popular, it may be for the reasons some of the Prestige sets maintained popularity (except for those with relatively low mintage commems): because of the packaging and presentation.

But I personally suspect they'll become a numismatic backwater before too long, like the three-coin Bicentennial set did.

  • I thought the medal would have been of equal quality to the coins....it looks like a poorly made token..if it had been of equal quality to the proof coins then it would have gained a premium over time...but I think your right, it is or was the mints way to make an extra 1/2 million...
  • I have not seen these sets but did notice that a couple weeks ago they were selling on Ebay in the $70's but have now dropped to $45-$55. I was thinking about a set but from different posts on different threads here it sounds like most are disappointed with the set. I guess I'll pass.

I think these things are great.

For $20 you get two proof nickels and a proof Sacawagea PLUS the Peace Medal in a display box.

I bought 8 and have sold 6 so far - between $50 and $60 each. I hope I can sell the other two before the price drops

  • If I were the mint I would be ashamed of that Medal......it should have been produced with pride, and what it stood for...the medal was given to the Indians in 1801 and it just should have been a medal of quality instead of a carnaval ride token.l
