1975 Topps BB cello pack bust.....

I just opened 3 packs of 1975 Topps cello. As usual, they were way too tightly wrapped so the top 3 and bottom 3 cards had corner issues. The first pack yielded a Steve Carlton, a sharp Tony Oliva (the spot at the top is not on the card), and Tom Seaver with a gum stain. What a waste. I'm thinking the Oliva grades a 9, while Carlton grades an 8 with slightly touched corners and centering issues. 2nd pack yielded a big fat zero. Third pack yielded a Keith Hernandez RC which should get an 8 due to touched corners, although it could sqeeze by as a 9, but thats probably just wishful thinking. While I was looking for a Brett, Yount, or Carter RC for my collection, I definitely couldve done worse, but I definitely could've done better. I'll probably end up losing a few bucks on the deal, but it was fun. I think wax is the way to go with this set seeing as how racks can be search because the player's name is so far down on the bottom.

No, just looking to get the big RCs for my collection and selling the rest, grading whatever will be profitable. I'm doing this on a larger scale with late 70s and early 80s bb, fb, and bask.

I tried to PM you but was unable to. Send me an email at yankeeno7@aol.com with a price you would be looking to get on the cards you don't want.
    Thanks

I could make up stories all day about how I think I could turn a profit, but the reason I'm doing this is because it's fun as hell and I've always wanted to be able to open crap like this. I have two things going for me:

    1) I've been making decent money for the first time in my life and I can afford to take on a hobby
    2) The price of this stuff is still reasonable compared to the value of the cards inside. Maybe not every set, but there are certainly bargains to be had. I think Steve Hart has 1982 Topps FB cello boxes on special at $100. That's a set with LT, Lott, Munoz RCs (all in the top 2 of at their position all time) and Montana's 2nd card. A steal.

I'd much rather than do this than pay $100 for a box of modern (I'm not knocking it, just not my bag) with a chance to pull a great auto, but more likely getting a Jason Varitek game worn jersey card that has exactly 0% chance of having any value ever. Even old mint commons can fetch a few bucks if they grade 9 or 10 depending on the year. Plus, they're the cards I always wanted growing up, and you can't put a price on reliving your crappy childhood. I mean, who didn't want a Joe Montana Rookie in Mint condition that grew up in the 80s?

If I could, I'd like to suggest this item as the next for you to bust open:

Cross your fingers and open it up...

I think the Hernandez RC looks pretty good. I can't argue with opening the era you are doing - especially if you have the funds. The 78 set has two great RC's and of 79 has Oz. I think the cellos are too condition sensitive - everyone has their preference - my gut tells me the best condition will come from packs and racks if not searched and properly stored. Of couse, as everyone knows, if the gums doesn't move around in the pack, it's probably melted!

    Keep'm coming!

yeah, i saw that ajw. i gave it about 2 seconds thought before I came to the realization that 5 g's is way too much to spend on one pack of cards. Plus, I may get lynched by Mark Murphy if he heard I opened it.
  • Yeah, that Sheldon rookie is sweet.
