Grade this Montana RC....

Just pulled out of a 1981 cello box, this card has slightly worse TB centering on the back than it does on front. My scanner isn't the greatest, but the bottom left corner is touched, and the others are sharp. There's a tinge of flaking on the bottom edge. I'm on the fence with this one. Either an 8 or 8 (oc) in my opinion, but I've seen cards like this get a 9 OC in other sets. I haven't graded any 81s, but my inclination is that they grade this card pretty tough comparably, and I think the corner definitely takes it out of 9 OC status. I'd be thrilled with an 8 NQ. Any thoughts?

Thinking cello packs and vending boxes will lead to corner issues like you describe.

I agree with vending boxes, but cello boxes from the early 80s when they werent so tightly wrapped have been pretty good to me as far as sharp corners go.

I am 99% sure that will grade a 7. In fact I just sent the same card in and it received a 7. The weird thing about it is yours looks identical to mine.

I guess a 7 and an 8 OC are pretty much the same. I was just trying to gauge how they are grading the 81s. Thanks for the input and I'll let you know how it comes back 950 days from now.

Actually 8OC counts as a 6....and if I were choosing between 8oc and a straight 7, I know I'd want the 7. Something about OC cards that I just have never liked.

I agree with the 8OC. Who knows though, on the last test we all agreed on a 7-8, and the thing was actually a freaking 10!! beautiful card though.
